Actually, numerous authors and song-writers have remarked upon the phenomenon.
Happy & in love = writing angst
depressed & unhappy & lonely = writing loveydovey fluff
additionally:
sexual frustrated = writing porn

I write fluff and porn. Haha.

The consensus seems to be that when you're the first, you're secure enough to write angst, when you're in the second, you don't want to depress yourself further so you write about waht you're wistful for, and when you're in the third zone, you're horny enough to write the porn.
