22.5.6. A comforting moment

Tara shoved her hair out of her face as she unlocked the front door and nudged it open with her hip. She collected an armload of bags from the stoop and grunted softly as she carried them into the foyer of their home. She had spent the day shopping with Evie, the pair of them ending up in Babies-R-Us and having a field day spending loads of money. Everything from new cloth nappies to teething rings to a little baby drum kit was bought. It probably would have been cheaper buying shares in the company. Buying things for their wee boy, however, was never something Tara and Lachlan balked at. They only had one bite at the baby apple, and they wanted to enjoy every minute.

The only thing was, their wee Riley Patrick was growing up so quickly. He was already seven months old and starting to teeth to boot. He was a perfect little baby boy package with big blue eyes and blond hair like his Daddy. He was getting more and more of his own little personality every day, and the new parents couldn't be more content with how happy their baby son was. He liked to grab anything in reaching distance, and more often than not things would end up in his mouth if he could maneuvere them there. He was a giggly, drooly, wriggly bundle of joy for their whole family. And they wouldn't change it for anything. Tara loved being a Mummy. She loved being a wife and having a family all of her own. She couldn't get enough of her boys, and she could see more and more of her amazing husband in her wee son at every turn. He had the same cheeky grin, and inquisitive nature. There was a talent there, too, but they just all had to wait to see what it would eventuate to.

Leaving the bags by the stairs, she kicked off her shoes and stifled a yawn, making her way up the hall and into the living room. She couldn't help but break into a grin at the scene she was met with. Father and son out like a light on the sofa together. Riley had started teething over the last week or so, and Lachlan had been up all night with him when he had been cranky and teary. Even now, the baby's little chubby cheeks were flushed bright red, but Tara was relieved to see him settled. She had learnt early on with her baby boy that it wasn't what you gave him or how you did anything that mattered, it was just that someone he loved could be there with a cuddle if he was feeling bad. Most times, a cuddle was all it took to stop the tears.

The TV was on, but the volume turned right down; that and a small lamp behind the piano the only light bathing the room. Lachlan was lying on his back with Riley tummy down and cuddled up on his chest. Lachlan's arms were wrapped securely and protectively around his offspring, and Riley's little blond head was tucked up under his Dad's chin. But the icing on the cake for Tara was the way the little baby hand was wrapped around Lachlan's thumb and the way Riley just seem to fit perfectly like a puzzle piece in her husband's arms. That scene, right there, made all the pain they had gone through just worth it. She went over and kissed their foreheads, smiling at how they both seemed to have matching deep breathing patterns. It was summer and wasn't cold, so she just made sure their t-shirts were free of uncomfortable creases and then turned the TV off. They could sleep a little longer before dinner.

It was amazing how one's whole life could fit so snuggly on a sofa.
