Dear Stephanie,
Welcome to spring! I am writing this on the morning of the Vernal Equinox, the day when night and day are equal in length. It's said that it's possible to balance an egg on its end, on this day, echoing the balance of day and night. If you've got time, try it today (carefully!). Be very patient, and you should see what looks like a miracle.

As it turns out*, you can balance an egg on its end on any day of the year, so if you don't have time today, try it over the weekend. Or engage in egg-balancing each time you open a new carton of eggs, and you can experience little miracles regularly!

Healthy living is a lot like the egg trick. Many of us believe that if the right set of conditions manifests, we will be able to align our lives in a moment, shedding our "dis-ease" to exist forevermore in harmony with our bodies and the universe. In actuality, living well takes thoughtful choices and daily attention to the needs of one's body and mind. That's a lot more work than balancing the egg. The good news is that you don't need to wait for the planets to align to feel better. The ingredients for living well are with you, and around you, every day.

As the world around you begins to awaken from winter's slumber, take some time to do something good for yourself, to nurture your wellness. Breathe deeply, eat something nourishing and delicious, move in a joyful way, and laugh a little--or a lot--as you feel the world shift into a new season.

And above all, enjoy the changes around you and within you!
-Stephanie

Living Well
Why we do the things we do...

As Stellaria continues to grow, I am often asked "why". Why do we offer such a range of classes? Yoga, t'ai chi, and meditation seem to fit with most people's ideas of "health", but why belly dance? Why knitting?
Like most questions that matter, the answer is deceptively simple: health is not just a physical concept. The longer I practice natural medicine, the more I cherish the philosophy of holism, defined by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as "...a theory that the universe and especially living nature is correctly seen in terms of interacting wholes (as of living organisms) that are more than the mere sum of elementary particles." Medicine is notorious for taking a compartmentalized view of the human being, and while it can be a useful perspective, it is also a severely limiting one.
Having a healthy body--one that has passed physical exams with flying colors, one without symptoms--doesn't guarantee feelings of wellbeing; nor is having a chronic illness an insurmountable impediment to feeling whole. Each of us is more than meets the eye, and an awful lot more than can be experienced through microscope, stethoscope, psychological assessment, or even the much-hyped full-body MRI...
