In Which I Give Up on a Book

I promised you last week, dear reader, that I'd have for you a review of Stephen King's Under the Dome.  Well, I've got most of one, and a confession.  I'm about 800 pages in to an 1100 page tome, and I'm not going any further.  I know how it's going to end.  Some of the details are unclear, and I'm not entirely sure what's going to become of all the characters, but I just don't care.  I've had a delightful and busy weekend, but every time I had the choice of picking up this doorstop and knockng out another 100 pages or so (it's a quick read, and reasonably engaging - no chore, mind, it just doesn't grab me) I decided on the other option in front of me.  That's not a good sign.  So I'm writing oft the sunk costs and moving on to something else.  Not sure what - I"ll have to look over the "to be read' shelf and make a decision.  Oh, the review?  It's The Tommyknockers plus The Stand with a dash of Children of the Corn.  I've read a decent amount of Stephen King in my life, but at ths point it does seem like he's starting to repeat himself a bit.

Thursday I might have been able to get some readong done, but I went out for a steak dinner at Houston's in Santa Monica with colleenky  and had a great time demolishing a very old fashioned hunk of well-cooked red meat with a loaded baked potato, and talking about music, life, political philosophy, etc. etc. etc.  Beat reading that dreary book like a bodhran at a pub session.

Friday night bewcastle and I popped in Monsters vs. Aliens and sat back and enjoyed the fun.  And she bought be brown rice sushi to eat.  Yummm....  Again, way better than wading through the end of King's latest opus.

Saturday our rugby match got rained out (phooey!) but I ended up havng a nice chunk of found time.  So I knocked out 10K on the rowing machine and finished up season 1 of The Wire before heading out with bewcastle  to rizwank 's birthday bash, where I saw graydons elizabethr popepat , ian_tiberius , colleenky (who arrived at the same time we did), keltraine among others.  Met some of the younger Enigmans, including one from the JoCoSho last weekend, passed around some 43-year old scotch to selected  fellow connoisseurs and generally had a marvelous time comparing biceps, stealing straw hats, mixing drinks, and revelling.  Again, way way more fun than Stephen King.

And today bewcastle and I were at the Huntington along with casketgirl and Dr .Fiance, richardabecker , rzelle and CDSB , and tracyphoenix who got me to organize this whole shindig to begin with so she could see the Ellsmere Chaucer.  Great food at High Tea, wonderful scenery in the Japanese Gardens, and gorgeous artwork in the newly renovated main gallery, where the presentation of the collection is much improved.  And again, well, I 'm sure you know where this is going...

So thanks for heleping me pass a few empty hours Mr. King, but I'm afraid you ain't got nothin' on my great friends... Better luck next time...

friends, books
