I guess I'm apparently in the minority here; I liked it overall.
I'm referring to
This all-night art show inspired by one in Paris. And I mean all-night; I stayed til 7 in the morning, I liked it because I met friends old and new, experienced interesting art, people and music, and ended the night making spontaneous art of my own with some new friends in a drum circle.
The Good:
-Primal Source (The interactive sound fountain), but only really after they turned off the parking lot lights around 4am. Who doesn't love a legit excuse to yell your head off in a public place?
-The installation made of balloons. There are some amazing photos on Flickr of the drawing in the sand.
-The spontaneous "DJ set" under the Pier. I don't the actual woman's name who put it on, but I know that the music was by
Square-1, aka Stephanix. After the DJ's were shut down (see "The Bad" list), this woman set up her little portable sound system up under the pier where the glowing "creatures" were. She put a CD in, which is really good, and much better than the clips on Square-1's Myspace page, but you can actually download what I'm talking about; the "Minimal Mix" for free on the website. Once the breakbeats started dropping, several people gathered to dance. Then after I said "this shit is tight!" or something, she gave me a free copy of her CD. Awesome tunage for the drive home thru the creepily empty streets.
-I really liked Raul Campos' set after Garth Trinidad.
-I got a lot of exercise walking in the sand.
-I love drum circles and creating percussion all night long. This time, my hands are no worse for wear!
-What can I say?; everyone loves the crown!
-Watching the sun come up!
The Bad:
-There were no DJ's after Raul Campos. They shut it down because, I have been led to believe, people were getting too drunk and falling down, and the paramedics were concerned. I was kinda bummed, but I just started making my own music with plastic bottles. Luckily, there were people with real drums I got with and we really had a lot of folks dancing and adding to it.
-There were not enough bathrooms. There needed to be many more porta-potties on the pier itself, and up and down the beach.
-Not enough places that sold water.
The Disappointments:
-I forgot my actual-glow-in-the-dark shirt. Duh? What was I thinking?
-Speaking of that, there weren't enough people sporting glowing things. I gave away all the glow bracelets I was bequeathed by a friend who left early; trying to spread the joy.
-My number one regret was that I didn't see the Mentalscape thing where EEGs are hooked to people and the outputs are "displayed on a dimensional canvas of lights that constantly shifts...creating a public emotional beacon.
-Then, I also didn't get to anything inland really.
