Jamie McCrimmon was certain that such a lengthy hospital visit was unnecessary. He had, after all, sustained only a rather insignificant flesh wound in his altercation with the cybermen. A lesser man might have needed special attention, but the McCrimmons were made of stronger stuff. Still, the hospital served strong tea and nearly edible biscuits, and the staff were kind, if a little condescending.

“Well, seems as though everything checks out,” said his doctor, scrawling something on his clipboard. “How are you feeling, Jamie?”

“I told the nurse already, I’m fine,” shrugged Jamie. “Believe me, the Doctor and I’ve had our fair share of skirmishes with beasties. This wee little scratch is nothing I can’t handle.”

“So you and this... Doctor of yours, you go on a lot of adventures, do you?” the Doctor raised his eyebrow, cleaning his spectacles with his jacket sleeve.

“Oh, aye,” nodded Jamie. “And Zoe, too. The Doctor’s got quite a knack for getting himself into trouble, so we’ve got to have a knack for helping him out of it.”

Jamie’s doctor chuckled, seemingly to himself. The strange man smiled at him with the kind of familiarity that made him wonder how they could possibly know each other. It seemed to Jamie that the man watched him with the kind of cautious warmth reserved for a friend from many years ago, but that was impossible. Years ago for Jamie was centuries ago for anyone else, and long before this man’s time, after all.

“I suppose you must make a pretty good team, then,” concluded the doctor, hanging Jamie’s chart on the end of the bed. There was something intangible beyond his affable chitchat; a sadness perhaps, pensive, almost nostalgic.

“Oh, we do,” Jamie agreed. “The Doctor’s... well, we’re... the Doctor and I, we... I just... he’s the most incredible person I’ve ever met.”

“Looks like your friends are about to arrive,” observed the doctor, taking Jamie’s hand as he helped him gingerly off the hospital bed. “I’d say you’re going to heal just fine.”

“Of course I am,” replied Jamie. He noticed that the doctor was still holding his hand. He blushed. “Though, between you and me, I wouldn’t mind if the next place we end up is just a wee bit less exciting for once.”

“Treasure these times, Jamie McCrimmon,” smiled the doctor, letting go of Jamie’s hand with what seemed to Jamie to be great reluctance, “life’s too short not to.”

“Aye, I always do, Doctor Smith,” said Jamie.

The doctor smiled at him once more, almost wistfully, before turning swiftly down the corridor, just as Zoe, Isobel, and the Doctor arrived to discharge him, and drive back to the TARDIS.

It was only much later that it occurred to Jamie what a curious coincidence it was that the kind young doctor at the hospital had been named John Smith, but he supposed, with such a common name, it should not have been surprising at all.
