Twenty-Fourth Check-Up

[He clears his throat.]

Good to hear everyone had a good time at the masquerade.

[A pause.]

For the new arrivals, my name is Jamie LaPointe, and I'm the on-board doctor.  I'm up on deck two most of the time, if you need me.  If I'm not there just give me a call over the network.

Doctor LaPointe? It's Janelle no Bryony. Would you have time for an appointment sometime in the near future?

Yeah, any time is good for me.

Excellent. I'll be there shortly then...

[Fifteen minutes later, she arrives at the clinic, looking surprisingly fresh and lovely for a mere twenty-four hours after the masquerade. She looks around the room to see if anyone is there.]

Doctor?

[He looks up at her from his paperwork, taken aback by her presence for a split second before remembering himself.]

So what can I help you with?

[She smiles and walks up to the desk.]

I think a basic exam would be best, if you have the time. I wanted to make sure that everything is in proper order before I continue with my work.

[With her hands folded together in front of her, standing there with a pleasant smile on her face, she looks almost demure. Certainly there's nothing about the way she looks that indicates her profession of choice.

[He watches her carefully, putting down his pen and starting to put away the paperwork.]

I, uh, I've never really done the whole family doctor thing... what's the work?

[Janelle nodded in understanding.]

Of course. It's not very much. We have monthly visits to check for any obvious signs of anything irregular, to rule out that we've caught anything from patrons, and anything else the doctor might feel needs checking for someone of our profession...

[Takes a pause. A long pause.]

...patrons.

Yes, patrons.

[Janelle blinked. Hadn't she heard something about the crew having files on everyone? Had she been wrong? What was that other word someone had used...]

I'm a...companion? In Terre D'Ange we're called Servants of Naamah...

[She waved a hand dismissively.]

Do you have the time, Doctor?

[He shook his head.]

Yeah, okay. I have time, just...

[He scratched the back of his neck nervously and glanced over at one of the clinic beds.]

If you want an all around check up it might be good to put one of these on...

[He grabbed a folded up tunic from a drawer and handed it to her, walking over to one of the beds with a curtain surrounding it.]

You can change in here. Just let me know when you're ready.

If you think it necessary...

[She took the tunic from him. After following to the curtains, Janelle shrugged her dress off her shoulders and let it fall to the ground. She turned back to the doctor]

Which way does it go on...?

[He kept his head bowed and didn't look at her, knowing his face was burning up. He reprimands himself; he's a doctor, he shouldn't be thinking like this.]

You just... tie it at the back of your neck...

[Janelle slipped the garment on and grasped the two strings, tied them in a neat bow and turned her back to him.]

Like this?

[The gown seemed rather more a hindrance than a help for her check up. It wasn't as if she felt any inhibition around a professional healer, and she doubted it did anything but get in the way of his examination.]

[Jamie grabbed the rather ignored stethoscope and started the routine check up - getting the simple things out of the way before moving on.]

As far as the files go, no one on the ship has a transmittable disease.

[Janelle had been planning on asking him that rather delicate question after the exam, but was pleased he'd volunteered it instead.]

Thank you. That's good to know. At Bryony we had records on every possible patron, on every person who frequented the Night Court and information on their health and such. Now that I'm here...I have no information.

[She watched him while he worked, admiring the focused look in his eyes, and let herself be led through the exam. Breath in, breath out.]

[All the simple stuff was done, and he took a step back.]

And you... were clean when you got here.

[He avoided eye contact as he went looking for the copy of her file he had in his desk.]

So I...
