[For some reason, Jamie hasn't been feeling all that well. It didn't start out as a physical thing, but now he can feel it in his stomach and he absolutely hates it ( Read more... )

[Bryn has been cured for almost a full week now, and while the boat hasn't returned to normal it's calmed enough for Bryn to feel steady on her feet again. With the new engagement ring on her finger and an injured brother to check in on every day, she's distracted enough to not brood as much about the revelations of the Halloween party as much.

That is of course, until she heads into Kuma-ko and sees Jamie sitting there.

Last time she'd tried to ask questions, he'd avoided her answers and wouldn't even look at her. Bryn walks over to his table with a deep breath, intending to try again.]

Mind if I join you?

[He looks up, down at the bottle and then back up at her.]

Uh, yeah. Go ahead.

[Surprising. Bryn eases down into a chair across from Jamie and tilts her head at him before speaking.]

How are you doing?

[Jamie doesn't answer. He just kind of snorts.]

[Bryn stiffens and her eyes narrow.]

Fine.

[She reaches up with her right hand and brushes some of her hair out of her eyes.]

I have questions.

[Glad she doesn't have to badger him into it, Bryn tries to figure out where to start. She overheard quite a bit while on deck 76 but the answers were more big-picture.]

Why'd you do it? Why did you agree to kill all those people?

[He squeezes his eyes shut and runs his hand through his hair. When he opens his eyes he looks incredibly weary.]

'Cause I...

[His voice breaks, but it's more because he's never had to talk about this before and less because he wants to cry.]

I was scared of dying. I didn't feel like there was a choice.

[Bryn swallowed.]

That thing...it showed us that vision. You didn't look scared.

[Her tone isn't accusing, but it's clear Bryn can't completely reconcile the mental picture she has of him now and the one that thing had shown them.]

Well... after you do it so many times...

[He realizes that was probably not a good thing to say.]

I was probably high. Or... something.

[Bryn flinches at his first comment and looks away briefly.]

I never would have thought you'd be capable of such a thing...

[She breaths deeply and taps her fingers on the table top, pausing to wring them together every so often.]

So we're all that's left, and Redd is taking us to the Golden Shore. It actually exists? We'll be safe there like Kage said?

[He really has no excuse for being a terrible person. More than terrible.]

Yeah. You.. and your... [He gestures at the ring. Time to pour himself another glass of whatever the hell this is.]

[Bryn follows his gaze to the ring on her finger and her breath catches for a moment.

Well, now they both feel awkward.]

My fiancé.

[She finishes his sentence with some reluctance.]

[She breathes deeply, and sighs. Her head drops down and she slowly draws her hands into her lap, out of sight.]

So, all those people who left the ship. No one's come back remembering they were ever here until you...what happened to the people who left, Jamie?

[After all, she's been on board almost two years now, and has befriended several people, many of whom are gone. It was impossible to forget them, and she wanted to know definitively what happened to them.]

[He takes a deep breath.]

You... never know. I mean, me, I had a job to do, but everyone else...

They're either gone or they're still out there somewhere waiting for us to pick them up.
