001 - Public Video

[The Doctor's very first communique with the rest of the Barge is a video of him, seated at a desk similar to that in sickbay on Voyager. Behind him are a few shelves. However, the rest of the room - or what can be seen of it - is strikingly bare. No bed of any sort, no medical equipment.

He doesn't appear to mind.]

Greetings!

I beg your pardon?

Let me get this straight: you're actually a hologram, and you actually served on some futuristic starship, and you actually have a mind of your own and no one freaked out about technology developing a life of its own?

Freaked out?

You're an AI.

That's correct. Well done.

Is it the artificial or the intelligence part that surprises you? I would have guessed the former, but the latter seems to be in short supply around here.

[You're getting one back, Doc. :|]

Aren't you supposed to come with a set of three rules or something? You'd except a piece of equipment to answer you. [He's so thinking of Asimov.]

So how does a computer program become sentient?

[And someone has to let the cat out of the bag a little bit at a time.]

Sentient AIs generally don't like it when you question their right to exist. They get really touchy on that subject. It's probably not a good idea to do when a good number of them have superior physical or calculative capacities. [Do not piss off a gatbot. It is not fun. I do not recommend this.]

I mean no offense by it, sir. Aside from being impolite right off the bat it's less than a good idea.
