[The Doctor's very first communique with the rest of the Barge is a video of him, seated at a desk similar to that in sickbay on Voyager. Behind him are a few shelves. However, the rest of the room - or what can be seen of it - is strikingly bare. No bed of any sort, no medical equipment.

The NX-01? How is that possible?

If I wasn't so concerned about the murderers, thieves, and SARS outbreaks, I'd be worried about the Admiral's method of tinkering with temporal mechanics.

To answer your original question, yes. I'm a hologram.

I'm reluctant to tell you anything else; I hope you'll understand my reticence, but I'd hate to think what interesting little kinks are being caused in our timeline just because of this conversation.

I understand, but it is unnecessary. We tend not to remember such important details when we leave the Barge. There is a Commander on board from a year later than you.

Commander T'Pol. If you don't mind me venturing a guess, I'd say you're Vulcan?

Though I don't know the capabilities of the other doctors, no doubt you'll be pleased to know I've had a good deal of experience treating Vulcan ailments - if the need arises.

Who is the other Commander?

[Oh she is so happy he has no idea.] Indeed. It is comforting to have a doctor familiar with Vulcan physiology on board again.

His name is Data; he'll likely introduce himself before long.

Well, I don't know him personally...but I have studied his Starfleet career - as much as I could, in any case.

He's a fascinating example of sentient, self-aware artificial intelligence, like myself. I'm very excited for this opportunity!
