The new Doctor Who companion will be known as Clara Oswin, the Mirror can reveal.

Insiders on the show say Clara is more than a match for the Timelord and is a computer whizz who is feisty and flirty.

One of her opening lines to the Timelord is: “Rescue me boy and show me the stars.”

She will initially be referred to simply as Oswin by the Timelord and is played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

But before Clara hits the show, there is still current companion Amy Pond’s exit in the fifth and final episode of the seventh series called The Angels Take Manhattan.

It was filmed in New York and features the Timelord’s enemies the Weeping Angels.

Talking of her exit, Karen Gillan, 24, said: “I didn’t read the scripts because I didn’t want to make it real.

“I think it was a few weeks before I read them. I had read the rest of the episode just not that bit.

“There is so much I am going to miss, especially as we have become good friends now.

“I’ll miss all the running down corridors, that is so much fun.

“It is such a life changing experience, I can’t even describe it.

“I didn’t even offer Jenna Louise any advice because I want her to have her own version of that and not follow any preconceptions.”

* The new series of Doctor Who starts with Asylum Of The Daleks on BBC1 at the end of the month.
