Real-life mother and daughter Dame Diana Rigg and Rachael Stirling are set to re-create their relationship onscreen in a new episode of Doctor Who written specially for them by Mark Gatiss.
Set in Yorkshire, the story - described by Stirling as "funny and original" - casts the pair as a mother and daughter harbouring a dark secret and will mark the first time they have worked together.
Further character details remain under wraps, but Rigg and Stirling will appear alongside Matt Smith’s Doctor and new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman in the episode, which is due to air next year.
Dame Diana Rigg - best known to fans of cult film and TV as Tracy Bond, 007’s only wife, in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and as catsuit-clad crime fighter Emma Peel in The Avengers - said of the announcement: “The first time Rachie and I will be working together is on an episode of Doctor Who specially written for us by Mark Gatiss. How lucky is that?”
Rachael Stirling, who recently appeared in Snow White and the Huntsman, added: “What joy. I am looking forward to the madness of Doctor Who enormously.
"Mark Gatiss has written a gift of a script and an on-screen relationship between Ma and I that is truly delicious. We have never before worked together because the offers have not been tempting, but when such a funny and original script comes through you know the time has come.”
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat also shared his excitement, saying “Dame Diana Rigg, Rachael Stirling and a Mark Gatiss script - a combination of talents you could only get in Doctor Who! Frankly, I'm terrified already!"
Filming on the as yet untitled episode began today in Cardiff, with director Saul Metzstein at the helm.
