I thought she learned his name in "Let's Kill Hitler," when the Doctor whispered something in Melody's ear to "tell" River, and she said, "Oh, I'm sure she already knows..."

I'm sure it was 'Tell River Song I love her."

Nothing else (apart from his name) would really make sense. Esp not not-yet-River's "Oh I'm sure she knows that". It's the sort of thing people say as they're dying, and as a clever message to River herself (you become the person I love), it's unbeatable. Plus, I sincerely doubt she'd go to all that trouble in the finale for a man who didn't love her back.

If there's anything I've learned about Moffat, it's that beneath all the timey-wimey stuff, everything is very straightforward. In LKH he let her know he loved her. Here he lets her know that he trusts her completely. (Although she has to almost destroy the universe before getting him there, but hey ho - he's very stubborn. Good thing she's stubborn too. *g*)

Also, it would perfectly mirror TenToo and Rose on the beach. The Doctor doesn't exactly shout these things from the roof top...

Actually, I think a big part of the finale is about him finally stopping running (like he said in TIA), and accepting that he is loved and that he deserves to be. Which is why he decides to marry River after she tells him about all the messages from his friends offering any help they could give.
*jawdrop* Oh my god. You are a freaking GENIUS! All that guilt, all that pain, all that MISERY that he's been running from... And then River shows him that he's loved. By everyone. By millions and millions and millions.

*heartbreaks*

BEST. EPISODE. EVER.

(I've been saying for YEARS that if RTD set out to break the Doctor, then Moffat is putting him back together. *sniffle* And he has. And it's beautiful.)

Excellent deduction. It makes complete sense. Plus, it explains the look on her face when the Tessalecta (sp?) shows her what River looks like. She's utterly gobsmacked. Maybe this is the moment when all her brainwashing/ conditioning falls apart and she starts to become her own woman, no longer the plaything of the Silence.

It's the only things that makes everything fit together. And why she breaks so completely in TWoRS. She deliberately changes herself, stops being The Woman Who Kills The Doctor, and tries to become The Woman The Doctor Loves (/The Woman He Marries) - and then it all falls apart when she's brought to that beach.

So, just like Ten (I love the Ten parallels, they're GLORIOUS), she goes 'Screw the world, I'm a Timelord, I'm not going to follow the rules anymore!'

(I am working on meta... it's all bleeding through. Hope you don't mind.)

I agree with this. Besides, if it had been his name, Melody would have replied, "Why are you telling me your name?" But, yes, I agree that he was telling her that he loved her and that's what propelled Melody into being River.

I think there's also adventures that River took with the Doctor while she was in University, most likely set between "The God Complex" and "Closing Time" for the Doctor because of that age gap, this furthering their affection. You know, I'd love some NSA novels that are just River and the Doctor, not the Doctor with the Ponds (as awesome as the Ponds are.)

Besides, I believe Moffat from Confidential when he said River doesn't know his name yet. It's still early days for her.
