Thanks - and I love Terry Pratchett - especially the Witches.

I think it was definitely something that Rory had to face himself - a choice HE had to make.

The Doctor is very self-loathing - but maybe also there was a bit of an attempt to make Rory and Amy understand that these are the kind of decisions the Doctor faces all the time.
