Doctor Woo-hoo! Matt Smith strips off while filming scenes for new Beeb drama based on Olympic rower Bert Bushnell

He's an unlikely pin up but Matt Smith clearly has picked up a large number of admirers thanks to his role on Doctor Who.

And the actor gave his fans a treat when he stripped off during a break from filming on the River Thames for his latest TV role.

Matt, 28, is starring as Bert Bushnell in a new BBC adaptation of the Olympic rowers' life and he's been hitting the gym in order to get in shape for the role.

Slim pickings: Matt Smith showed off his trim physique during a break from filming a new BBC drama based on the life of Olympic rowing champion Bert Bushnell

So, I'll be rowing that way?: The actor was kitted out in full retro rowing apparel for the new role

This was evident in the star's trim physique which he unveiled while on the set of the new one-off drama.

Looking a far cry from the dashing Doctor Who, Matt bore more than a passing resemblance to children's character Where's Wally in his circular-rimmed specs.

His geeky glasses were part of a retro outfit which included a white hat, shorts and the Olympic vest - which he later removed during some time out from filming.

Matt has been in training for the role for over a month, lifting weights and working with expert rowers to get the technique perfect.

Row, row, row your boat: Matt Smith and Sam Hoare, as Dick Burnell, power along the Thames

Doctor phew!: The actor has been in training for a month to get in shape for his latest role

Matt plays Bert Bushnell, one half of the rowing team that won the gold medal in the 1948 Olympics in London for the double scull.

Bushnell, who died in January last year, was teamed with Dickie Burnell six weeks before the final to race for the gold.

The drama tells the story of their relationship and how the two men from different backgrounds overcame their class differences to claim victory on the water.

No moor: Matt takes a breather from filming the no doubt exhausting scenes

Burnell is played by 6ft 5in actor Sam Hoare who was educated at Eton and is believed to have rowed at the college.

Bert left school at 14 to take up an apprenticeship with an engineering company in Maidenhead, while Burnell went to Eton and Oxford and was the son of C. D. Burnell, a member of the Leander eight that took gold for Britain at the 1908 Olympics.

Bushnell, who died last year, once explained his relationship with Burnell: 'There was class tension - and it came from me being bloody awkward.'

But he added that they both got on because neither of them bore grudges.

Bushnell's daughter Sue said she was looking forward to watching the drama when it's broadcast on the BBC to coincide with next year's Olympics in London.

She said: 'It will be very strange to see my father being portrayed by an actor, especially one who plays Doctor Who!'

Smith will be back as Doctor Who next year having signed up for another seven episodes.
