SDCC - Matt, Karen, and an amazing week!

Helloooooo everyone!

eclecticmuse suggested I share my story with all of you over here at the MattCave, so here I am! I just got back from SDCC on Monday, and a few pretty amazing things happened.

Firstly, we went to the Nerdist Podcast Live on Saturday! I was able to get tickets for the 8pm show with Matt and Karen, and Whil Wheaton ended up being a surprise guest. Whil talked with Hardwick for awhile, and then Matt and Karen came out to do their part. It had also been shown on the Nerdist Twitter account that people could send in questions

(this pic is from Tumblr, I think it's from Egaal's photostream originally)

Matt’s looking at me! Nerdist was going on about the fact my friend and I were in costume as Eleven and Amy. (We were in costume, and chose the Rebel Flesh/the Almost People for that night). Also add in that we'd been to a previous Nerdist show in costume, and he seemed to recognize us from that, saying something along the lines of

“Hey - it’s you guys! And - you guys!”

Yeah, there was definitely laughter.

Karen was squinting to see us which was when the picture was taken, and then Hardwick asked for our names. I asked my question to Matt and Karen (few things are as fantastic as having Matt Smith look directly at you while you’re talking), and then my friend asked Matt if he’d hold his (my friend’s) sonic screwdriver. So that picture floating around of Matt holding a sonic screwdriver with Whil Wheaton freaking out in the background? Yeah, that’s my friend’s sonic.

There's also a video of our part here, which the person sitting next to me was kind enough to take while we were up there. The pocket cameras aren't always perfect, but I think you can hear the talking pretty clearly and see most of what was happening on stage.

And their answer to the question I asked absolutely made my night.

So that was Saturday!

Sunday brought another turn of events. We got in line for the drawing for the limited Doctor Who autograph signing that was happening after the panel with Matt, Karen and Toby. And I wasn't feeling optimistic about our odds at all, because there were a lot of people lined up for a chance at a hundred tickets. They had tossed in a hundred or so with a stamp on them (among a whole slew of unmarked ones) and we had to draw from bags to see if we'd get to go to the signing. My friends hit a streak of luck and were able to get tickets, and I was the last one to pull.

And to my surprise - I got one!

So we took wristbands that we were given with the room and time to be there on them, rushed to the hotel room to pack (and I changed into another Amy costume because my friend was going as Eleven and I was being encouraged to change, too), pick up a photo for my friend to have signed, and then get ourselves to the room at the indicated time.

Talk about press everywhere, I'm not even kidding. And security was tight. You couldn't get anywhere near the door without a wristband, and they were all cut off of us as we went in so there was no sneaking in and out. But I'll tell you what - it was amazing. Karen is so bubbly and full of life, and Matt is every bit as handsome as you think he is. They were both willing to talk, too - and they remembered us from the night before, which was even better! We chatted with them as long as we could, and Karen noticed my outfit! It went a little like this.

Karen: "Hi!"
Me: "Hi!"

(Karen took my pictures to sign, looked at them, paused with a startled look on her face, then looked back up at me. She looked a little startled, then leaned in a bit closer.)

Karen: "You have that jacket!"
Me: "Yeah!"
Karen: "Where did you find it?"
Me: "Topshop."
Karen: "In that colour?"
Me: "Yeah!"
Karen: "I thought they had to dye it that color!"
Matt: "Oh, you do have the jacket! And you've got your checked shirt."
Karen: "And your hair, that's your natural red?"
Me: * bites lip, looks side to side, makes a shhing motion. *

(This prompted laughter from the both of them.)

From here we talked some more and thanked them for being at the podcast the night before, and then they both looked at each other, then at us, and said "That was you! Hi!" which just prompted more laughing and smiles and some confused stares from the BBC staffers working behind the tables.

They were absolutely wonderful, and they seemed to really want to talk to us and to the other people there, but we were being given that side-eyed stare by the Comic Con staff and I wasn't about to step on any toes. But it was absolutely wonderful.

Toby was quieter than they were, but he was very nice. :) Definitely looking forward to the new episode! He wasn't at the podcast so there wasn't the chance to ask any questions about that, but it does sound like some good things came up from the panel.

So, there's my Comic Con story! :)

[EDIT] And one more picture! This is Matt while I'm asking him my question at the podcast.

(Which means yes, in that picture, he is looking directly at me.)
