What bothers me most about those cries of "PC" is the underlying message that merely acknowledging our existence is somehow wrong and pandering.

This. I agree that visibility is important (representing all sorts is important) but your comment reminded me of an episode of The Mentalist this season. On one level it's your average crime procedural, where someone dies, so they have a murder to investigate, etc., and in one episode there was the offhand mention of going to talk with the victim's husband. Said victim was a man. No eyelash was batted at the fact that these were two men who had been married, they went and talked to him, and that was that. I had to give kudos to them for that one.
