[Background] Hatori’s story began back when he had a strange dream as a child. In it, he learned that Ren’s child would be a girl. But what made the dream odder was the fact that Shigure, Ayame, and Kureno had it with him. No one understood how they could have known…but they did.

After that, his life skipped a few years until we came across his time in high school. These years he spent mainly with the other members of the Mabudachi Trio (this trio includes himself, Shigure, and Ayame) which were now kept in albums. Shigure and Ayame were his closest friends. They understood him better than anyone and were there for him when he needed them. In return, he was there for them and often scolded them for being problematic. He knew all of their secrets and they knew all of his. Often they irritated him but he wouldn’t have asked for them to be any different. Not that he would ever admit to such a thing.

Sadly though, we also witnessed our first encounter with his special ability. For when Yuki’s friends discovered his secret, it was Hatori who was responsible for erasing the childrens’ memories. However, it wasn’t clear just how long he’d had this power. From here, he must have gone to college in order to become a doctor though this wasn’t mentioned. Also, it was assumed that he might have taken away Momiji’s mother’s memories after this.

Then Kana came into his life. From the moment she first became his assistant, she began to melt his frozen heart. For the first time in his life he found that he could easily smile and laugh. She was his ‘spring’ and she continued to accept him even after she discovered his secret. Therefore, he decided to go before Akito to ask permission to marry his love. Unfortunately, this did not go as planned.

Akito flew into a rage and injured Hatori’s left eye. She screamed that everything was Kana’s fault. Horror-stricken, the woman believed the god. She began to blame herself. And so, the god brought the doctor before her to inform him that he could take away Kana’s pain. It was what she wanted after all. Didn’t he want her to be happy? Naturally, he complied.

When that fateful day came, he listened to her as she apologized to him. She told him that it would have been better if they hadn’t met. In silence he listened to all of this before assuring her that everything would be alright now. Then, in a flash, she was on the ground sleeping. Crying, he quietly told himself that he was the one who should have apologized to her. He was the one who couldn’t protect her and failed her. Even after she left his life, he carried this in his heart. His greatest wish was that she find someone to love her.

But he never blamed Akito. Akito was his god. Because of the curse, he would always listen to her and would obey her commands. Like being told to erase the memories of others. She would always be more than a patient and family to him. The bond between them was one he just couldn’t fight. And so, no matter how horrible this was for him and no matter how unhappy he was, he would always keep her free of blame.

Awhile later, Tohru entered his life. This happened when he was told to go to a festival the school was having. At that time he was charged with taking a picture of Yuki and Kyou. His other task at the time was to ask her to come visit him. When she did, he warned her to leave the Sohma clan now before she was too heavily involved. She refused to do so. Oddly enough, he found that she softened his heart. They came across each other yet again. She tripped and ended up turning him into a seahorse. When he woke up, they talked some more and he asked her ‘What happens to snow when it melts?’ Her answer surprised him because Kana had said the same thing. ‘It becomes spring.’ Then he found out about Kana’s new love. He was happy for her and wished her well though he never spoke to her. Even when Ayame tried to show him the pictures from the wedding, he just pushed them aside. He didn’t need them now.

Afterwards, he continued to be the Sohma family doctor. Caring for patients and even Tohru when she became ill. (Since meeting her, he had become fond of her. He could see the good she was doing for the various members of the Jyuunshi and approved of it greatly.) His next significant development occurred when he met up with someone he hadn’t seen in two years. Mayuko…Kana’s best friend. As it turned out, Shigure set them up to meet each other again. He was there to pick up a book after he’d been told to come back the next day. Right away her mother started saying that Mayu might be in a relationship with him. For that reason, she dragged Hatori away to keep away from her mother. During their conversation together, she eventually started crying. He comforted her and thanked her for being willing to shed tears for him. As an appreciative gesture for this, he took her out to get something to eat.

[Personality] On the outside, one cannot find someone who is more of a serious workaholic. He can come across as cold and even uncaring at times. Also, he is rather conservative in how he presents himself and his personality to other. His friends have been known to tease him about this fact but the reality is that there is more to him than that. But, he will often keep this close to himself rather than revealing it for all to see.

‘Cold’ is actually an inaccurate description for him. He is a caring individual who has an extreme dislike for seeing others in pain. In fact, around children he can sometimes show a certain soft side that is a window into this caring side of his. Because of events in his past, he prefers that such things be kept private. He finds it difficult to open up to others and has really only done so to a choice few. Privacy is something he values.

At times, he can have a remarkably dry sense of humor. He can be very sarcastic in these situations. Smiling and laughing are not his major aspects he’s known for. If anything he’s professional practically all the time. Very rarely is he anything but calm and collected. This does not mean he never smiles. It only means that these occasions are rare.

Frivolous social whims tend to get on his nerves. A good example of this being his phone conversation with his friends Ayame and Shigure. He is well known for working while they are speaking to him, holding the phone a good distance away from his ear. Often, he will turn to work over having a social life. This is where he is comfortable. That does not mean he won’t have a conversation with someone while relaxing and smoking one of his cigarettes.

[Specialties/Abilities] As one of the Jyuunshi, his main ability is really more of a curse. When hugged by or put in bodily contact a member of the opposite sex he will find himself unwillingly transformed into a seahorse. He is the Dragon of the zodiac but that does not mean he is able to become one. His version is a small and helpless seahorse. This does not include female members of the Jyuunshi. He does not have the same trials with them. This transformation can last for an unknown length of time. However, when he becomes human again he will be without any clothing on.

As the Dragon, he has the ability to naturally attract dragons towards him. Since dragons do not exist in his canon, this means seahorses. Being sea creatures the only time this could really happen would be if he were to visit, for example, an aquarium. They will follow him everywhere he goes and naturally want to be with him.

Another ability he posses is that he is able to erase memories. This is extremely vital when it comes to preserving the Sohma family secret, even among members of the Sohma family. To do this, he must rest his hand on the person’s head. He can then select which memories to erase and they will be gone forever. It is much like a form of hypnosis.

Less supernatural abilities include his knowledge in the medical field. He is a doctor and is therefore trained to handle all things concerned with medicine. He is very organized when it comes to doing this and has the capability to deliver a shot in an absolutely painless manner. Another ability that he seems to have is that he can control Ayame’s wild behavior with ease. He just has to say one word and his friend will obey him. (Best example given is when Ayame refused to leave Shigure’s place until Hatori came over and told him to do so.)

[Affection] Hatori is very conservative. He would prefer not to be hugged (especially by females.) Instead, he will approach in a professional manner.

[Fighting] He can be injured or killed in a fight. However, he usually does not get involved in fights. He prefers to stay out of the way and care for the injured.

[Other Permissions] A character can read his mind and I will allow this. However, he will not treat that invasion with kindness. During that time, all things are available to the other character. Though I would prefer any and all intrusions be discussed with me ahead of time.

[Other Facts] Because of his past, Hatori has a tendency to avoid relationships. Also, he is almost completely blind in his left eye. Perhaps the another important detail is that Hatori has this strange way of being able to find out things about other people. And he can tend to be a less than kind doctor to those who get on his nerves (being less than gentle when poking with the needle). Finally, he has a devotion to Akito that causes him never to place blame upon her and to go to her when she needs him. This is part of the curse and it’s something he really can’t control.
