“It’s like high school with scalpels”

“Apparently I have a lunch date tomorrow.” stated Sheppard as he closed.

“With who?” asked Lorne from where he sat monitoring the patients progress.

“McKay” replied Sheppard with a grin that was evident even with the surgical mask in place.

Lorne looked up from his myriad of machines with eyebrows raised and responded, “Ooookay that’s a new one. Who did you here that from?”

“I was checking charts at the nurse’s station when the new the nurse tells me ‘heh have you heard Dr. McKay has a date with some general surgeon by the name of Sheppard.”, said Sheppard. “She commented that she thought it was great that he had found someone.”

“Did she realize that she was talking to the general surgeon Dr. Sheppard at the time” asked Lorne.

“No” smirked Sheppard, “So I asked her if she knew anything about the date and she happily informed me that the date was to be a picnic on the roof near the helo pad. She said she thought that was cute and wished her boyfriend would do something like that only she would want it to be at a park. I asked her why the roof and she said that they could be outside, no one can really spy on them, and they can return quickly if paged.”

“How much more information did chatty Cathy supply you before she realized that you were Sheppard or did she ever figure it out?” asked Lorne.

“I asked her if there was a hospital pool going in relation to the success of the date, because I was interested in placing a bet” responded Sheppard. “She said to her knowledge there wasn’t one, because it was all hush hush.”

“How did she not figure out that she was talking about you to you.” inquired Lorne as he made adjustments to insure a rapid but uneventful recovery for the patient.

“The anonymity of wearing scrubs.” laughed Sheppard as he placed the last staple.

Lorne just shook his head and wondered sometimes if the teaching hospital was nothing more than high school except now everybody wielded scalpels instead of book bags. He and the other attendings often joked that they should be keeping notes to write their own version of “general hospital” when they retired. Although gossip is commonplace in any workplace or small town, it seemed magnified at the hospital. The staff could put teenage girls to shame with the amount of information that was manipulated, expanded and embellished. Because like high school their lifestyles resulted in the staff spending a large amount of time together not just in the hospital, but during their free time outside of work, which just resulted in a constant source of information for the “guess what” hotline.
