IC Information:

Name: Doc Scratch

Fandom: Homestuck

Timeline: Right after negotiating with Spades Slick, before dying and thus summoning his master, Lord English

Age: As old as Alternia, the trolls' planet, approximately many millions of years, possibly more

Appearance: Doc Scratch is average in height (at least a head taller than Spades Slick) and wears a white suit with a green bow-tie, a striped green dress shirt, and green suspenders underneath his white jacket. His whole body is white and his head is a giant, featureless cue ball. He has no face whatsoever and his expressions rely solely on body language. He often chooses not to use expressive movements as it hides well what he is thinking. His appearance is derived from a mix between Lil' Cal (Bro's puppet) dressed in a suit and a prophetic cue ball.

Abilities: Doc Scratch is a First Guardian of Alternia, the trolls’ home planet. First Guardians have the duty to protect their planet and help it to serve its ultimate purpose. All First Guardians share a similar DNA code which gives them the power of the Green Sun, a giant green sun three times the mass of the humans' universe located in the Furthest Ring (space outside of all universes). These powers include near-omnipotence and, in the case of First Guardians with intelligent forms, near-omniscience as well. While Doc Scratch is capable of doing almost anything, he very rarely uses his powers of omnipotence even slightly. His omniscience, however, is something he heavily relies on as a manipulator. His abilities of manipulation are high above average, as he can beat someone in a game of advanced chess even after telling them every move he will make ahead of time. He is incredibly good at cause and effect reactions (similar to a cue ball knocking into one billiard ball which knocks into another) and setting up situations to best benefit himself and his purposes.

Often in order to manipulate others, he will use a form of omnipotent hacking to contact them through respective IM services, with no username and white text, even if he’s been blocked. He can also enter a conversation between when not invited. Tracing him takes a ton of skill, considering he has no username and uses a typewriter instead of a computer, but is possible to do by experts.

In the case of violence, First Guardians use both green fire and green lightning as their primary offensive weapons, though Doc Scratch almost never engages in any fights. In the case of physical violence, he is somewhat lacking and is easily knocked down even though he cannot be caught by surprise. He can’t be hurt though, and cannot die by normal means. He also seems capable of using guns as he owns a pistol that hangs off a chair in his apartment. He views himself as a weapon of his master, who is said to be considerably more powerful than himself.

Personality: Doc Scratch is not only endlessly knowledgeable thanks to his omniscience, but he is incredibly intelligent as well. He knows exactly how to use the information he has, and exactly what the right move to make is, except for on the occasion when there happens to be a dark spot in his knowledge. These dark spots are a minor irritation to him, and tend to trouble him when he comes across them. He usually holds a very formal air around him, keeping a calm and composed demeanor, almost emotionless, aside from appearing constantly amused by his mind games. It is rare and very uncharacteristic for him to ever lose his composure and completely flip out, having only happened once as far as we have seen.

Doc Scratch is first and foremost a manipulator. He is a master at manipulation, and has been using his skills as a manipulator to prepare the universe to receive his master, Lord English. He almost takes a sort of pleasure in the manipulation of others. The one thing that makes him more unique in his manipulating abilities than anyone else is that he never lies. He never uses deception on others, merely coaxes them into making decisions by playing with their emotions or omitting certain pieces of information. He does, however, tend to make jokes and very sparingly plays pranks, due to the nature of his “father” being passed on to him.

While Doc Scratch takes pleasure in manipulating others, he does not particularly enjoy being manipulated himself. The one who has been in constant manipulation of him is his master, Lord English, and Doc Scratch tends to speak with almost a melancholy tone when referring to himself as merely a throwaway weapon to be used by his master. The only other person to ever have manipulated him into a direct action was Terezi, after she filled him in that Vriska was in possession of one of his fortune-telling artifacts.

Recently, Doc Scratch has begun to grow tired of his existence as he has almost reached the end of serving his purpose. He wishes to die, a difficult process but very possible. It is also the final condition he must set in order to summon his master into the universe.

He also has a soft spot for young ladies.

History: Every planet destined for intelligent life has a First Guardian, a creature that can take many different shapes or forms but has a specific DNA code that allows them to use the infinite power of the Green Sun. First Guardians are to carry out the purpose of the planet they inhabit, whatever that may be. In Doc Scratch's case, his purpose is to summon his master, Lord English, a time traveling demon whose power is said to be even greater than Doc Scratch's nearly limitless power.

Doc Scratch was born thanks to many convoluted time shenanigans and phenomenon. Five trolls were manipulated in an unexplained way to write out pieces of his DNA sequence in journals, two pairs and one lone code. Vriska and Terezi were together in charge of one part of the code, writing the code as 8r8k and H34DS respectively. Tavros and Aradia together provided another piece, writing the code as t1CK and t0ck respectively. The last piece was provided by an alternate timeline version of Gamzee who had gone insane and written the code honk HONK in a ~ATH book with the blood of his friends. All of these books were brought back to a laboratory in the trolls' session. Along with the books, the ectobiological material of Lil' Cal, a ventriloquist dummy belonging to Dave's older brother, and an all-knowing magic cue ball were used to create young Doc Scratch, who was sent back to Alternia at the beginning of the planet's life.

Ever since then, Doc Scratch has been manipulating people throughout all of time in order to further his plans to summon his master, a task he knows he will not fail. His manipulation is seen to go as far back as the trolls' ancestors, as he has manipulated Vriska's ancestor, Marquise Spinneret Mindfang, whom he'd patronizingly considered to be his protégé. Apparently she managed to one-up him, however, by gaining possession of one of his “seeds”, a magic cue ball that can tell the one who holds it anything with 100% accuracy, so long as the one asking can see inside it. Later on, this magic cue ball will be passed on to Vriska who will use it in much the same way as her predecessor.

Like Mindfang, Doc Scratch chose to repeat history by manipulating Vriska, seeming to have paid more attention to her than any of the other trolls. By playing with her emotions and motivations, it is through her that he sparks many bitter rivalries within the trolls’ group, particularly between Vriska and Terezi, but generally between Vriska and the rest of her team. Through her, he was able to blind Terezi, cripple Tavros, and even kill Aradia, all through careful pressuring of her emotions.

Doc Scratch has also shown manipulation through a sense of security and compassion. When Kanaya was young, she would often wander out into the desert, insomnia making her unable to sleep as the sun was constantly keeping her awake. One day, Doc Scratch visited her and was able to coax her into a peaceful sleep, waking up her dreamself on the moon Prospit. He called himself her Guardian and made occasional visits to her as she grew up. All of this, however, was still in order to set up more conditions for the arrival of his master, and Kanaya later mentions feeling used by him.

Doc Scratch is a member if not a key leader of the Felt, a gang if mobsters living on Alternia lead by Lord English, each member representing a billiard ball, one through fifteen (plus cue ball and cue stick.) However, it seems as though his role among the Felt is minimal as he is never seen interacting with most of them and never mentions them nor is mentioned by them. He also appears to live somewhere other than the Felt mansion. The only direct interaction we’ve seen of his involvement with the Felt is his recruitment of Snowman, the 8 ball member of the group and only female member. Upon recruiting her, he bestowed her with space time powers, most notably the consequence of her death resulting in the destruction of the universe. Recruiting her and setting her up so that her death would result in the death of the universe was another circumstance he had to set up for the summoning of Lord English.

Recently, Doc Scratch has been speaking with Rose and informing her that he wishes to die and that he wishes for her to be the one to kill him. He has been giving her useful information about her session of Sburb and how she can save herself and her friends. He has given her the task of destroying the Green Sun, to end his own life and meet the final condition needed to summon his master, as well as eliminate the power source of Jack Noir, the kids’ unbeatable “final boss.” Because of his manipulation and deliberate obscurity, he caused Rose to go Grimdark, gaining evil powers of the Gods of the Furthest Ring.

Roleplay Sample - Log: Doc Scratch was ready to die.

Everything had been set up, all according to his vast plan, a plan that spanned countless lifetimes using a countless number of pawns and pieces and an infinite amount of careful thought. No, not a plan. A game. He enjoyed this game he’d been playing, he really did. He found it a delight, a pleasure, to be in control of fate itself, to be the lead of this intricate waltz to bring about his master, Lord English.

But in the end, he wasn’t really a controller of fate at all, was he? He was nothing more than a liability. His master was already here, able to travel through time, and all events in time, past, present, and future, technically could not possibly change. Doc Scratch only knew that it was his role to play a part in the events that would lead to the summoning. In the end, it seemed that fate controlled him, that he was at the mercy of space time all along. It was so hard to tell if his decisions were really his decisions at all. He was nothing but a tool. And he was tired. He enjoyed being a manipulator, he enjoyed it immensely, but in the end it was he himself who was being manipulated. And he wanted it to end.

The 8 ball had been pocketed. The game was over.

Doc Scratch put the revolver to his head, feeling the cold metal against his perfectly round sphere. His finger tensed on the trigger, hand steady and meticulous. Slowly, he squeezed the trigger.

A loud bang rang out in his apartment, and the revolver fell from his hand to the ground with a clatter, barrel smoking.

The First Guardian sighed and touched his fingers lightly to his undamaged head. If only it were that easy.

Roleplay Sample - Journal: For the first time in life, I think I will be asking a question I do not know the answer to, and it’s fairly embarrassing… but I suppose it can’t be helped, since it’s nonetheless a question that begs to be asked.

Where am I? Or, a better, broader question that may yield more answers: What in the world is going on here?

It feels so odd to be asking questions that aren’t rhetorical. If I said this wasn’t the first time I’ve done it, I would be lying. But no matter. Even though I’m confused, a very new emotion to me I assure you, I will find out what is going on here, one way or another.

And I’m not going to stand for it.

Comments: As a quick disclaimer, I know Doc Scratch is an extremely powerful if not overpowered character, and I don’t take that lightly. I do not, however, plan to focus on his powers since he will obviously be losing most if not all of them. I plan to focus on his puppet master personality and how he will handle this new handicap while still trying to control people. Also, as a warning, I plan to write all of his text in white the way he does in the comic, so there will be a good amount of highlighting to do for the readers. Depending on if he is feeling courteous, though, he may mark the start and end of his white text with black brackets. All of his actual speaking, however, will be plain and simple and not in white.
