Nothing seems real

As many of you know, I moved back to Belfast to live with my Aunt and my Grandma. Grandma had her share of health problems including Fibrosis of the Lungs.

We are having major building work done so when she was out of sorts last Wednesday 10th September I didn't really think much of it. However as the day went on she was definitely not very well, so was planning on getting doctor out to see her the next day, but she started to struggle to breathe, so we had to get the paramedics and they took her to the Emergency Room. The medics there found an irregular heart rhythm and due to her needing oxygen they admitted her.

On Thursday she seemed fine, but on the Friday she was in a bad way, very unresponsive and confused. The doctors had found a stomach bleed but they believed it under control.

On Saturday afternoon she seemed a bit better and more at herself, however we received a telephone call from the hospital about 10pm asking us to come down. I felt physically sick at this moment.

When we got to the ward we were sent to the relatives room and the nurse explained that my Grandma's heart had stopped and they were working on her. Another nurse came in about 10 minutes later explaining that they had got her heart started again but that the doctors would be in to speak with us. The registrar came in and explained that whilst her heart had been started again they had to intubate her and with her medical history there was no likelihood of her breathing on her own was slight.

We were all totally in shock at this point, but we made the decision that the best thing to do was to take her off the ventilator and let her slip away, as she was in no pain.

The doctors made her comfortable so we could say our goodbyes and whilst they were doing that we went and had some fresh air and a couple of cigarettes.

She passed away at 11.10pm on Saturday 13th September with her family by her side.

She was buried on Wednesday and I have to believe that she is now in a better place with my Grand-da and my late Aunt Geraldine.

Molly Heaney may she rest in peace.

ETA:  Thank you to everyone for your kind messages and thoughts.  Thanks to my friends, both off and online, I have managed to get through this difficult time, and through the difficult times that will no doubt come in the future
