I aten't dead, for reals

Hello, 2016! It's been so long I can't entirely remember how to html.

I have Broadway RPF and Les Miserables to thank for dragging me back into the crazy world of fandom. I now have a tumblr, wonder of wonders! Come follow me.

As a result, I'm taking voice lessons again so I can sing "One Song Glory" and "Bring Him Home" the way I want. I am ( Read more... )

First and foremost, baby pics can be found here, here, here, and here. :) I'll be putting some more up this week since she turns four months old tomorrow (!!). J and I are doing quite well--our daughter is an absolute sweetheart who actually lets us sleep, for the most part, and is an incredibly good-tempered child. Sort of surprising given how abrasive J and I can be. ;-) She's definitely stubborn, though, so it's only a matter of time before the general misanthropy kicks in.

We moved house to the suburbs last summer after I found out I was pregnant and we suddenly had to care about things like local schools. We're a bit far from everything, but what we lost in nearby amenities we gained in peace and quiet (and lots of trees), so there's that. The house is in a permanent state of half-furnished-ness, since we went from a tiny city flat to a much larger house and realised as soon as we moved in that we had enough furniture for approximately 2.5 rooms. Of course, baby things have now exploded all over the place.

There was, sadly, some pretty nasty family drama (detailed here if you're curious), but I think we've mostly moved past it by cutting off the toxic person involved and focusing on the baby.

My writing has been slapdash lately, unsurprisingly, but I will say I was quite proud to finish a Big Bang about three hours before I went into labour. Most of my fic these days is in ASOIAF/Game of Thrones with some Shakespeare and random oddities here and there (I did finally finish the co-written Harry Potter/Sherlock crossover, for what that's worth!). No Hannibal fic as yet--I'm content to just revel in the canon and have Weird Meta Thoughts that I have yet to commit to paper. Editing the collection will probably change that.

Gil and I talk a few times a year--usually chasing one another for last-minute betas before Histories Ficathon and Yuletide--but it sounds like she's doing well. She's occasionally on Tumblr too (with the same screenname) but she mostly lurks as far as I've seen.

Please send Gil my love and let her know I am thinking about her ♥

I am squeeing over ALL THE BABY PICS. K, your child is a treasure! And the fact that you get to stay home with her is a huge gift. Cherish all the time you get to spend with her, for real. Academia can wait. An unfinished house on a tree-lined street in the suburbs = bliss.

As you know, I am very keen on your Shakespeare and Historiesfic ;) And, let me squee quietly with you as you mull weighing in on Hannibal fic, and perhaps we can work our muses up together~! (My muse just wants to make Dancyfic all the time, so you need to tell it to hush.)

I am having all the fun with her (even when she's screaming in my face, she's somehow still adorable--clearly this kid is the height of evolution since I am normally NOT a maternal person at all!).

Hehe, my muse is currently stuck on an enormous WIP that I desperately want to finish but has hit that point where it merges with all the worst bits of canon (EVERYBODY dies; literally three out of my four narrators die with varying degrees of horror involved), but once I'm finished, clearly I will need new things. Perhaps some sort of unholy Shakespeare/Hannibal mashup is in order...

(Incidentally, if you happen to follow House of Cards at all, I keep wanting to write a ridiculous crossover with the utterly soapy-yet-somehow-insanely-compelling Scandal.)

I am definitely here for Shakespeare Hannibal! Do you think you will make Murder Husbands, or gen (or other pairings - there is a dearth of hetfic, actually, and I am quite partial to Bedelia in fic)?

I adore House of Cards (CLAIRE FTW), but Scandal makes me want to spew (and, uh, to desire Mellie/Jake to run off together into the sunset. Actually, I understand Shonda might be going in a Mellie/Olivia direction - and if they did, that would interest me ;))

I am transfixed by Bedelia on the show. Gillian Anderson is so quietly complex and I'm dying to read about what on earth was happening during those weeks (months?) she spent whirling around Europe with Hannibal. If you have any recommendations, I would love them!

Any fic I write is likely to be gen, although there will almost certainly be background Murder Husbands (because it's basically canon at this point). I will admit that the thought of Bedelia-centric fic is sounding more and more appealing.

Claire wins at everything and I adore her unreservedly (which is partly why I want her and Olivia to join forces because OMG). I have more or less the same feelings about Scandal--I started watching for Olivia, and I do still love her in spite of her terrible taste in men (does anyone like Fitz? Seriously?), but there came a point where I was mostly there for her fabulous outfits, and I haven't been keeping up with the most recent season. (In fact I got distracted by the equally ridiculous How To Get Away With Murder during the third trimester of my pregnancy.) All that being said, my fic idea involves doing away with Fitz altogether by way of Frank Underwood very early on (possibly cannibalizing the Amanda Tanner storyline) and letting the ladies take centre stage. I did write a tiny Scandal fic for Yuletide this past year as my attempt to dip my toe into the fandom, so to speak.

I totally want Frank to get rid of Fitz. Someone needs to do it, and President Underwood is the right guy for the job. I think all this crap about Fitz has kind of harshed me on Olivia, but I would be there to read your Claire/Olivia genfic ;)

I adore Bedelia, and I loved this sexy, pasta-without-plot Bedannibal story Tant’ è amara che poco è più morte. I also enjoyed this darker canon story:
Canto. There should be more! I am mulling in that direction; I am also mulling a sequel to Jack/Will, which I adored making, but all the heart wants rn is RPF ;)

Aaaah, those fics! I didn't know I needed that pairing but apparently I do. Maybe Bedelia fic is in my future after all, although both of those had such utterly magnificent narrative voices that I don't think I can do her justice.

Also, if that's what you can do with Jack/Will, I would love to see your take on Murder Husbands. Mmmm.

If Shonda gives me Olivia/Mellie, she might win me back. She's willing to write F/F if How To Get Away With Murder is any indication, and I've always found that relationship infinitely more interesting than Olitz. I do want to write that crossover if only to see what happens when those two really quite similar universes collide. (Frank & Claire + Olivia & Cyrus? Ye gods, it would be terrifying. Also awesome, I have to think.) And Mellie coming into her own as a political player after Fitz falls from power... It's a fic I've wanted to write ever since I started watching Scandal again (post-HoC Season 3).

;) come play in Hannibal when you're done with enormous WIP (and I am done with this Les Mis story that isn't ending!) and so I don't feel like so much of a noob - the good writers have all been around forever!

and I love your Scandal crossover thoughts! Frank would totally squish Fitz, but if Clare has left the building Mellie/Olivia/Cyrus could totally take down the Underwood presidency ;)

and, edited to add, if you were going to write Mellie/Olivia at all I would be seal-clapping. (I don't watch How to Get Away with Murder because my eyes would just roll out of my head re: how That Never Happens IRL and I dont believe J can watch it either!!) I loved how you wrote their dynamic in your story, Mellie deserves much more.

Incidentally, I love Cyrus and think he is woefully underserved in that damn show. I really like how you showed his connection with the Grant campaign and with Olivia in your story, too. Fitz doesnt deserve the people around him,is my main Scandal beef.

See, I sort of envision Frank squishing Fitz and Claire somehow convincing Olivia to join the dark side. ;)

HTGAWM is utterly ridiculous. And I totally agree--I in fact informed J about two episodes in that he should never watch the show in spite of the amazing Viola Davis because the legal stuff would drive him completely mad (especially the law school stuff--even I can tell how off that is!).

Oh, Cyrus. I love him too. And I was so angry when they got rid of James. No Fitz doesn't deserve ANYONE around him and the show simply can't make me believe that he does.

I am definitely leaning toward committing some Bedelia fic once the WIP is off my plate. (I don't suppose you've ventured into GoT fandom? It is a strange and often frightening place.)

I am watching GoT, of course (gotta love that worldbuilding and the sexposition!), but am kind of afraid of the fandom! It's sprawling and messy and has so many characters and the source material is so vast that the thought of participating more actively makes me exhausted ;) Also, all my favourites keep getting killed off, which is more than slightly irritating (CATELYN :( ) I would read, though, and am partial to Jaime/Brienne. Are you making genfic, or are you a Sansa fan?

Nooo, with Fitz gone either Claire or Mellie needs to be President! We can't leave Frank in charge. Mind you, Claire would totally be Dark Side President so your vision re: Olivia joining the dark side would still work ;)

I actually think Bedelia fic would absolutely suit your lush style and I would love for you to make it! I also totally need to work up my feminine muse: Gillian Anderson is my queen, I would love to write for her ♥ The ladies of Hannibal deserve so much more love.

Oh god, I know. Believe me. I've been in the book fandom since 2002. Your pain is felt.

It is an absolutely crazy fandom, I won't lie. I have constant anxiety about everything I post on Tumblr, which is both stupid and frustrating, but there it is. People can be really pissy about tiny, seemingly unremarkable things--I had a really awful comment on a fic of mine last year that delayed my working on the next chapter of the Enormous WIP for several months.

That being said, the canon is AMAZING. Most of my fic is pre-canon, to be fair, and follows the books more than the show, so there are a number of characters who don't appear in the show at all or are glossed over. I almost always write about ladies--my response to some of the aggravating sexist nonsense on the show. Anyway, here's a shortlist of fic!

AU where Sansa escapes to Highgarden
book!verse Cersei plots after the Walk of Shame
Backstory for the Queen of Thorns (two fics, both long)
Harry Potter crossover where Slytherins with potions solve everyone's problems
AU where Stannis marries Cersei. Wackiness ensues.
Pre-canon series including Enormous WIP of Doooooom

I'm also working on academic stuff on GoT, which makes for an interesting juxtaposition with fic.

Nooo, with Fitz gone either Claire or Mellie needs to be President! We can't leave Frank in charge. Mind you, Claire would totally be Dark Side President so your vision re: Olivia joining the dark side would still work ;)

Hehehe, no, Frank isn't allowed to be in charge (for long). I'm totally rooting for Claire to take over and if Frank survives that, he'll probably just sit back and enjoy as his wife pwns everything and everyone. And Claire would be the best Dark Side President.

The ladies of Hannibal deserve so much more love.

They really do. I love Murder Husbands, truly, but both Bedelia and Alana are so fascinating in different ways. (I admit I was annoyed that they had Alana sleep with Hannibal, but they did a reasonable job of working through that in Season 3.)

\\\O/// CERSEI. She is evil and ill-served by the book, seems like, but Lena Headey is so radiant and fantastic that I can't help adoring her ;) I will be there to read once I wrangle the first draft of this Les Mis fic into submission!

Crap. That is just awful, I am sorry that happened to you. I cannot for the life of me understand why some people feel the need to be petty and unkind about fic, that is just so uncalled for. And I know how respectful and careful you are in your writing, too, which makes things all the more uncalled for :(((

both Bedelia and Alana are so fascinating in different ways. (I admit I was annoyed that they had Alana sleep with Hannibal ME TOO. It was hugely annoying, though I understand why they went there, as a stand-in for Hannibal's and Will's conflict; I just thought Alana was ill-served by the execution of it, and WTAF defining her by her relationship with the MEN. (We need to fix this ;)))

I could write screeds about Cersei (and, to be honest, I have, some of which are posted on Tumblr). I love her to bits in spite of her awfulness (possibly because of her awfulness, because she is SO UNREPENTANT and I can't help but love that). While she does more awful things in the books, I actually find her a lot more nuanced and complex, at least in part because we get her POV in the fourth and fifth books and so much of what she does emerges from desperation and this intense, corrosive frustration with the system that's stifled her since childhood...my fierce lion queen, I love her so much. Lena Headey GETS her, which is why I think she's so wonderful on the show even if we lose that direct window into her head.

Me neither. I will grant that I was not especially happy with the ending to that fic ,as I had to finish it in a hurry to meet a deadline, but the comment was incredibly bitchy and harangued me for being unrealistic and OOC. I've had one or two of similar ilk on the Enormous WIP, and I'm sure it's because the way I chose to interpret events runs counter to certain shipping preferences and/or fanon. Fun times. I haven't had those kinds of comments since my heyday in Harry Potter fandom.
