Yeah. Thisa is a story I wrote for a class of mine. The planet name is from one of Amberfocus's fanfics, and that lone at the very end is from "The Doctor's Daughter." Sorry, couldn't help it at the time.
Poker winnings
Really, I shouldn’t have entered that game, but as I look at the freighter in front of me, I can’t bring myself to care. I never was any good at poker, and I can’t for any reason think of why I wanted to play it in that bar on my home planet of Betazorn 9. Especially since it was high-stakes poker. It had been me and three men. The pouch of jewels hanging at my waist and the interesting-looking tool in my hand were my other prizes, bet against my sapphire necklace. I slip my fingers along the chain. What in high Heaven possessed me to bet this? I ask myself. It had been a gift from my father before I left, the only thing he had every given me out of love, as opposed to necessity.
But as I look at my new ship, thinking that I can finally get off this blasted planet of bars and hotels, I decide that it needs a new name. Stellar Drudgery is painted onto the haul, and I see more than that. I see a path to being my own person, to finally being rid of the dreary life I left behind when I left the inn. That life of changing beds, cleaning tables, and taking orders is gone now, and all I can see ahead of me is freedom.
That is what I’ll call it, the Freedom. I’ll need to get it registered, and, upon going to the nearest place, I find that an easy process. One of the least-rare jewels in the pouch is enough to pay for the registration fee, and I have clearance to leave by night-fall.
“What in the world are you doing?” my friend asks me as I walk up to the door.
I smile, remembering the words of a man who had watched the poker game. “I’ve got things to do,” I tell my friend.
“Like what?” she asks.
“I’ve got planets to see, people to save,” I pause and grin, “and a whole lot of running to do!”
