Man-crush: Steely Dan.

I had two brushes with them earlier on, and neither of them really stuck. I got a copy of the greatest hits back when my mom ordered CD's from BMG, and I just never really listened to it (FM was amongst the first five tracks as well, and that's not one of my favorites). And further on down the line from that, the Me Myself & Irene soundtrack was half dominated by Steely Dan covers, with some good ones turned in by Ben Folds Five & Ivy. But like I said before, they didn't have a lasting effect and I got rid of them. When I asked to help dismantle the Charles Village store, I was going through the racks separating all the discs, I saw the Steely Dan section only had one CD left, and it was Aja. One of the better ones. So I took it home with me, and it rocked me so hard it made me forget how much money I paid to park across the street for the day.

Now I'm pretty locked in. I downloaded their whole catalog (leasing with an option to buy! hey, my CD store is expensive) and I've picked up a few of them when I can just because I enjoy them that much. Anywho, the reason this fan crush has relevance to me is the current engagement. I've always been a fan of the universe unfolding around me. When co-incidences happen, things are aligned and someone or something is trying to show you a sign or in this case a thumbs up. I know that's cryptic. But I believe in the little things.

On the way to the mall that day, I was listening to Steely Dan. I think it was Countdown to Ecstasy. I didn't have it on the brain, I wasn't humming it or nothing like that. When I walked into Bailey, Banks & Biddle - I felt lost. Didn't opt for help first, seeing if I can find this ring. When somebody asked again, I went for all that I could and described the ring and we were able to find it. Cutting to the chase, I bought said ring. The lady that helped me looked a little bit like my mom, and that felt a little weird. But I knew I was making the right choice in my life as I left, and looked at the information given to me - more specifically the business card of the lady that helped me. Her name was Denise Fagen. If that's not a sign that I've done the right thing, I don't know what is. (For those not in the loop or heard the name, the chief songwriter in the Dan is Donald Fagen.)

I was really happy about that little event, but then I had to work and I didn't let it stop there so I opened up a copy of the greatest hits for in store play. Though initially peeved on the first day or so because my manager kept taking it out before it ever got played, it's a regular fixture on the playlist, and something I can actually sell in that store.

Don't let Knocked Up sway your vote - the Dan does not gargle balls.
