It was never a huge nationwide craze but there was a thing back in the early 1960s for satirical coloring books. I believe it started in 1961 with THE EXECUTIVE COLORING BOOK (see above for a glimpse at the rewarding life of the office drone). Other such books followed and MAD did the coloring book gig quite a bit as I recall. For a while, it became a catchphrase in conversation ("You traded in your car for a new MG? Color me green!")
Which brings us to the song. It was first recorded by Barbra Streisand in 1962 but the version that got lodged in my cerebral cortex was by Dusty Springfield. And here she is... "My Coloring Book"
