BEATLES RUNDOWN: "Dear Prudence"

An endearing little song that starts so gently and draws you in. It builds up to a cheerful invitation to come out and socialize ("The sun is up, the sky is blue/it's beautiful and so are you") then fades away just as softly. As I understand it, this was written in the days when the Beatles entourage was being swindledenlightened in India by the conman>guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Prudence Farrow (you may have heard of her sister Mia, who introduced Woody Wallen to his current wife*) reportedly was just meditating TOO HARD and stayed secluded for long stretches of time. This went on for weeks, long enough that the others began to get worried about her state of mind. It's not that she would fall into the Cosmos and leave just her slippers behind exactly, but it's natural for friends to be concerned she could be developing mental problems the same way one might by going without sleep for extended periods or by excessive acid trips. So George and John went and coaxed her out. This experience led John to write this lovely little song, with some of Paul's most delicate guitar work.

AND for today's alternate take on the song, none other than Siouxsie and the Banshees:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDMZ_hA25M8
