I figure most of us have been through a conversation like this:
"No! Stop it! Stop!... why did you stop?"
"You said to stop."
"Silly. Don't listen to what I say, listen to what I mean!"
That whole spanking way of life, so confusing.
Anyway, this is from THE FANTASTIC FOUR# 38 back in May 1965, script by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby with Chic Stone inks. The usual horseplay at the Baxter Building. Even as a kid, I noticed when the word balloons had a few places of larger, cruder lettering. It sure looks to me like the word "catch" was hastily scrawled in, and the obvious original would be "spank." I mean, Sue is over the Thing's knee and he has his open hand raised. Her dialogue looks like it was revised, as well. "Get out of my way" doesn't match the rest of her dialogue. Maybe the original was simply "Let me go this instant." (Although I would love it if Stan had absentmindedly written "You leave my butt alone!" Not likely, though.
But that's not all. Back in THE FANTASTIC FOUR# 28, with the same creative team, we find this poignant moment. Marvel Girl retreats ("I don't do that stuff. I'm a nice girl") and uses her powers to spin him around until he settles down. The Beast then has a great line; as he enters the room, Marvel Girl says she's glad he's there and he replies,"It's purely accidental, I assure you! Fighting the Thing isn't exactly my greatest ambition in life!"
As to where the Thing developed this preference, allow me to do some Baker Street Irregulars-style speculation. He was introduced to the joys of spanking by Alicia. Makes sense. She was raised (almost said,''reared') by her bad-tempered step-father the Puppet Master. If she hit puberty and started developing erotic responses during a phase of frequent spankings ("You call that mopping the floor? I don't care if you're blind!"), she might well link the two. There you go, and years later she gets this boyfriend whose hand NEVER stings no matter how long the spanking goes on. I don't expect to see any of this in the Fantastic Four reboot movie, but you never know.
