LA, Part 1: Really... Another Trip Post?

Wednesday:
Katie and I got to the airport a couple hours early and headed over to Legal Seafood to get some beer and dinner. After a couple beers, I was tipsy enough to get on the plane with no regard to the fact that I would be shooting through the air in a tin can going hundreds of miles an hour. After a flight full of free music and sleeping, we arrived in LA.

Trisha, Katie and I took a cab to Trisha's awesome apartment. We all watched tv for a while and promptly went to sleep.

Thursday:
Thursday started out slow with cereal, coffee and tv. I was mildly apprehensive about our 2 pm car rental pick up, thinking we wouldn't be able to do that much that day due to the late start time. Boy, was I wrong.

Before getting the car we headed to a small taco place near Trisha's house called tacos plus. I got a fish taco and a veggie taco. Everything was fresh and delicious... I think these were probably the best tacos I've ever had.

We picked the car up shortly thereafter and headed to a bakery Trisha knew of. I got an upside down cupcake (chocolate cake on the bottom, cheesecake top) and felt full and kind of sick while we perused the record store next to it. Soon we were back in the car heading to our first real tourist destination... La Brea Tarpits.

The La Brea Tarpits are exactly what they sound like... massive tarpits that cover a large area. It is rather eerie looking in what looks like a lake and only seeing black sludge. It's also pretty cool because a ton of fossils of prehistoric mammals have been found there. We walked around, posed for a few pictures and then decided to walk to the Grove which is a big farmers market. Trisha and Katie got some donuts and we sat around for a while. Then we walked back to the car and went to the Griffith Observatory.

The Griffith Observatory not only had a great view of the city (even though it was cloudy) but they obviously had a coyote infestation since we saw two of them in the short time that we were there. Due to the cloud cover and the chill we only stayed for about half an hour before continuing on for more food.

We tried to go to a vegan restaurant but it was packed and we were starving. So we drove over to West Hollywood and went to and RFD (Real Food Daily) over there. RFD is pure vegan... nothing on the menu isn't. I had never been to a restaurant like this before. I decided to try the least vegan thing on the menu... the Ultimate RFD burger. In addition to an entirely fake burger, it also had fake bacon and fake cheese as well as other vegetables. Not the best decision... the fake bacon tasted like cardboard with bacon bits attached, the "cheese" looked more like goo and the burger looked like raw red meat with a similar texture. I wasn't pleased.

Soon we were back at Trisha's exhausted after 8 hours of action. We went to bed on the earlier side.

To be continued...
