Recently, I have witnessed some (former?) Hahn fans trying to find valid arguments why Erica Hahn was doomed to be axed from Grey's AnatomyThe list included

First of all, I want to ask where you have been reading people bad-mouthing the character? I know of one particular post in the erica_callie community (I think) where people were saying that the writers screwed up in never letting us see Hahn's background, and as such the reason why she acted the way she did. And that this may have resulted in people not liking her. Is this the post you are referring to? I commented in there too with the aforementioned opinion. That post in particular wasn't meant to say negative things about the character, it was more about how the writers failed. Anyhow, maybe that wasn't what you were talking about at all and in that case I'm just talking nonsense :p
I do agree with the reasons you give for why Erica Hahn was a great character. I still love her after all this time. And it still makes me sad to think we won't see her again. :(
I think you are spot on with this paragraph: However, it seems that many Grey's fans just don't have a knack for that sort of tension and humor. They prefer their tv world in black and white; which, by the way, is pretty sad when you think of how the show has constantly been trying to display various shades of grey. A big part of the audience just doesn't get that and is only interested in who hooks up with whom (and when MerDer are finally going to get married and have babies). Let's just say, they prefer it simple. And the show's creator as well as the network's execs seem to have adjusted to that (which is quite a shame).
It's just sad how most people who watch television just want to see the same old storylines again and again, just for mindless entertainment.
I've had and read several discussions with some people basically saying the same, trying to convince themselves of certain "truths" (that the character had been badly written, that she was overly abrasive, that the writers had taken it too far, etc.).
So, no, it wasn't just that one post on e_c. ;-)

Yeah. It's not that GA was an educational show or anything, but it used to challenge people in regard of certain conservative points of view.
And any kind of television, even the merely entertaining one, does have a subconscious influence on its audience.

So I agree, it's sad.
