She definitely did work as a character and would still be on the show if she didn't come out. There are plenty of strong female characters on tv, only they are all straight (or haven't come out). It is clear to me that on tv you can be a strong female character and be straight or you can be a young sexy fem who is gay/bisexual. There is no room for a strong lesbian. It's just not accepted.

The thing with those shows is that they were not on the big three/four networks. Those shows are not expected to draw in large numbers and are not fueled by the huge advertising dollars like a show like Grey's. I think that's why it worked for them. Nobody made much of a big deal with Willow on Buffy either (not that Willow was especially strong). I think smaller network shows have more creative freedom.

I don't live in the States and thus am a poor judge of how U.S. television networks approach crative freedom or how open-minded they are.
