Recently, I have witnessed some (former?) Hahn fans trying to find valid arguments why Erica Hahn was doomed to be axed from Grey's AnatomyThe list included ( Read more... )

>>Dr. Hahn didn't fail in her attempt to bring a special quality to the show. People failed her.<<

I couldn't have said it better myself. Wonderful post.

Except us, except the fans that petitioned and scrapbooked and reminded Brooke that we love her to bits and pieces!

True. :-)

But my post focuses on the character, not the wonderful actress who portrayed her. (I think we all agree that Brooke Smith had nothing to do with ABC's decision to get rid of the character.)

Seriously agrees with eveything you said. Grey's lost something special when they had her taken off the show.

The steak knife comment is still one of my favorites.

Agreed.

So very, very much.

Some people can't handle the snark, even when combined with other character attributes that add so much delicious depth.

(Besides, who could ever say Cristina isn't snarky? They should be used to snark.)

Seriously, you keep wondering.

I guess it was too much to have a second character with such attributes added to the show. (Especially one that wasn't restricted to hold back at times due to subordination. ;) )

They're probably just deeply offended that someone could out-snark Cristina and in just one line. Laughter.

Can't have two of those characters together if one will out-snark the other! Erica was the bigger shark attacking the familiar and smaller shark. They weren't prepared for Cristina to stop being the big fish! It was too much for the mind, too much too much...

so true.
I completely agree with what you've written. She was too good for the show!

Yes- a cocktail that was too much for Grey's-I totally agree - the character was "too" well defined - she was gay, tough, feisty, etc.. etc..in a way that couldn't be re-written or morphed easily into something else - so the option was to explore her deeper, find out what made her the way she was, look into her background - but not in this type of show - not enough time or depth to have that happen sadly. Erica Hahn probably belongs in a show of her own- a main character that might enable her to be all she could have and should have been.

While I would totally love to see her on a show of her own, I don't agree that this is a necessary step for the character to be appreciated more.

Just look at some of my examples. They aren't all main characters, yet they work and are loved.

I think the problem was the GA audience per se as well as ABC's poor judgment...

I can't help noticing how many of those characters are men. And I think Erica's unapologetic gayness has to be part of what some found problematic with her. Some man can't come along and tame her. Yes, Erica sometimes deferred to Richard but by the end I was trying to imagine her at that hospital as it was and it was tough. And what the heck is Derrick still doing there?
Yes I wish Callie had tried harder and that Erica hadn't just walked away but...
Also I think it was a conscious choice to
make her not so glamorous and so it was hard to hear the comments about the looks of the actress playing the role.

You might want to revise the list. ;-) There are aproximately as much women on it as there are men (Vasquez was a woman, too, and so are the two Sams from the kids shows I've listed).
