Litany of Woes

Apr 18, 2012 10:03

Obviously I should never have made an optimistic post last time, since the ensuing week has been a litany of woes. On Saturday night/Sunday morning when I was staying over at Grey's, somebody smashed the windows of several cars parked outside, including mine. They didn't get anything from me except the $3 or $4 worth of quarters in my ashtray (one ( Read more... )

I don't think B is trans - though I admit it would be interesting.

I'm not looking for her to actually transition, but it certainly seems she would prefer to be male. However, that may well be a result of the world she lives in -- there doesn't seem to be any real place for a non-conventionally-attractive woman who wants to do "male" things.

That's true. She would much rather be a dude, but they do eventually imbue her with traditional feminine feelings.

If she is trans she's a very femme (emotionally, not physically) gay man.

On a related subject, Jaime Lannister is a fucking dick. I was more or less neutral on him until he met Brienne.

You'll like him eventually.

I hated him at one point.

It's weird, by book 5 he's almost the hero of the story.

Huh...we shall see...right now he sounds like about 90% of the boys in my junior high school. "Hey, how come you're so ugly? Did you know you're ugly? Oh, by the way, you're ugly!"

Yeah. The thing is he was taught by his dad to be a bully. Once he realizes how fucked up his dad and sister are he makes a huge transition.

Good point ... and yet he's one of the few people who has ever been kind to Tyrion, which is a major point in his favor for me. I'll be curious to see how he develops.

The difference is he eventually gets to grow up and learn a little empathy and remorse.

I agree that she is living the only way she can. Women in Westeros who want to be soldiers or knights have to wear the clothes and walk the walk. There are several women, like the She-Bear of Mormont, who are strong female figures and not afraid to be strong. I wonder how many of them would transition if that was an option.

Brienne is certainly emotionally stunted, but she is true to her view of the world and to herself, if a lot naive.
