Paying For It

The sins of Amsterdam were still a recent surprise
And we were flying over Scandinavian skies ...Not much surprises me there anymore except rudeness: some tourists, of course, and the portion of the large expat community that seems to believe Amsterdam would be a much nicer place without all those uppity Dutch people. (This is seriously a thing. ( Read more... )

It was interesting talking to relatives while I was there. Their take on the drugs, red light, etc, was "yeah. its there. So?" I did find it fun to walk through the RLD a few times to grin at the jawdropped tourists ( ... )

Not being snarky, but why do you feel (if you do) that the RLD women are not in control of the situation?

No, i DO feel they have more control.

( sorry, it's like, hellmouth hot here in TO tonight, apologies if I wasn't clear. Brain's melting, you see.)

Also, please see my clarification re: "Dutch uppityness." I absolutely agree with you on this. (Well, except for that one cab driver who wouldn't take me even though I told him I was disabled because I didn't need to go far enough to suit him. He can suck it.)

Heh. I only ever had issues with NS rail, but several people concurred with me that it wasn't just me, they were nigh on rude/useless most of the time.

Coming from canada where we apologize to lamp posts, some of my fam's bluntness left me agog until I got used to it.

I've been living in Amsterdam for a year now as a disabled (but not wheelchair bound) person and that situation with the taxi happens ALL the time to me! If they do agree to take me what they consider to be a short distance, they are invariably rude about it - I've even been given full on lectures about why it is not worth their while to take passengers like me! I love, love, love living in Amsterdam but their approach to the disabled is flawed at best.

Just so this post isn't completely off topic...there is apparently a lot of evidence that many of the RLD girls are trafficked. This issue obviously disturbs me but on the whole I have no problem with consensual prostitution and think the concept of the RLD is in many ways a very useful way of tackling the issue without criminalising women merely using their bodies as they see fit.

Is "Dutch uppityness" like "French rudeness" where the French simply don't mince words or feel any reason to sugarcoat or otherwise waste your time? When I was 265lb and went into a store to buy a suit they'd just call out "you're too big we have nothing for you. Thank you." To many it would be "good God, they're forward" but from their perspective it's saving you the time of going through all the racks when they know full well they've nothing above a 42R.

I guess it can come across as uppity. I took it that way on the first trip but I kind of started to really dig that its just forthrightness, not rudeness. They don't want to waste your time with vagueness or nonsense.

Sounds to me like an attitude I'd like. At least, one of the aspects I love about living near and working in NYC can be summed up that way.
