Friends have contacted me asking about volunteer opportunities on the Gulf Coast, especially with regard to cleaning or otherwise helping wildlife. I also run across comments saying things like "If I could, I'd be down there rescuing and washing pelicans," which does my heart good. As far as I know, there are still enough wildlife professionals and volunteers already trained in this area to clean the birds and other animals being captured. A brown pelican has a nine-foot wingspan and can easily be stressed to death by human handling. Cleaning them is a very specialized job. However, volunteers are needed for other activities related to the BP oil disaster. These may not seem as glamorous as washing pelicans, but they will make a difference too. Please register at
Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana to be notified of these opportunities.
Also, I think I may have said this before, for clear, cogent information on this disaster, please follow
infrogmation. While I'm maundering, faffing on about Jed Clampett, and rolling around on the living room rug singing Beatles songs*, he's over there calmly posting devastating links upon which commentary almost seems redundant.
*Monday was a bad, bad day.
