Dinner

I finally made groceries after weeks of bare cupboards. Currently trying to decide whether I feel like cooking or not, and if so, do I want to make lasagna or buffalo meatloaf? My friend Harold (from OLGC) is recovering from cancer surgery and eating a low-fat, high-protein diet to help him grow a new liver, so I thought he'd enjoy a buffalo meatloaf because buff is much leaner than beef, yet just as rich-tasting if not better. I got some store-made gumbo in case I don't feel like cooking, and ... and ... I know this is all just fascinating ... but I'm trying to retain some semblance of normalcy when I feel like my home is sliding off the edge of the world. Coastal birds are dying. 60% of Louisiana's oyster beds have been shut down, restaurants are stocking up on softshell crabs and shrimp while they can. Environmental scientists are talking about "devastation of the highest magnitude."

We were doing so well. The rebuilding is vibrant, the marshes were starting to really come back from post-K devastation, we won the Super Bowl, we're getting a new mayor next week and a new police chief soon after. It felt like a fresh start. Then this. I wonder if we're just a codicil, a post-K postscript.

If you're on/can come to the Gulf Coast and have any skills that might help with the cleanup (or are just willing to get your hands dirty), please register to volunteer here. I registered to possibly help identify and clean coastal birds.
