Room 150

Oct 26, 2005 10:48

Peter was trying to get out of bed. His legs didn't want to cooperate with this proposal, and exhaustion? Yeah, definitely. Prying his eyes open took a lot of willpower. He ended up trying to slide across his mattress. Dammit, he wasn't sick! And he really didn't feel like holing up in his room. If nothing else, he needed to talk to a doctor ( Read more... )

Some time later Ray knocked at the door again. "Pete? Yo, Pete, wake up- I got the cavalry."

Peter blinked his eyes open, and without getting up, he just gave a weak yell, "It's unlocked."

Guppy follows Ray in.

"Hey Peter. How are you doing?"

Ray steps in and to one side, anxiously shifting his weight from foot to foot. "It's gotten worse since last night," he murmurs, but lets Peter do the rest of the talking.

Peter sighed, "Hey Guppy, thanks for coming. Sorry to have to put you on the spot like this."

He glanced over at Ray, "Yeah, I'd say that's pretty obvious now." At least he could still stand some last night."

"No problem, that's what I'm here for."

As a doctor and a friend. Even if he didn't owe Peter big time for helping him out. He comes over and sits on the edge of the bed.

"So can you describe this for me? Ray gave me a brief outline but I'm going to need to know some details. When did this start?"

Ray looks around for a chair and pulls it up so he can sit nearby. He doesn't bother straightening it out, just sits with his chin up on his elbows on the back of the chair.

It's like being watched by a very worried basset puppy.

Peter glanced over at his friend briefly, before turning back to Guppy.

"It started like two days ago I think. I was feeling a little tired that night so I went to bed early. Still got up late morning the following day, but again, still tired. The weakness in the limbs didn't start until late last night. Plus I think I fell asleep in the afternoon. Then, I tried to get up today, and I can't even keep myself standing without something supporting me."

Guppy frowns slightly.

"Okay, is this just in the lower body? Any muscle weakness above the waist? Are you able to move your legs normally apart from when you're standing? Any loss of sensation or pins and needles."

Precious little makes a person feel more useless like sitting around as a doctor picks apart someone else's case, but Ray doesn't want to leave unless he absolutely has to. He just settles in to listen instead.

And it's definitely appreciated, going by the grateful look on Peter's face to Ray.

He added, "I don't think so." He tried to lift himself up with his arms again, but the tremors running through them indicated the strain it was taking on him.

"I think it's all over." He shifted his legs around, and made a fist with his hands. "No numbness or anything. I can still move them. I just think I'll have to cancel the bodybuilding contest I was going to be in today." Still trying to lighten things with humor. Anything to hide the mind-numbing fear.

Guppy smiles to try and reassure him, but he looks pretty worried too. He moves over to Peter's feet and puts his hand against the sole of his foot, bending the knee a little.

"Okay, can you push against my hand for me?"

Peter nodded, and moved his foot forward. The foot shook faintly with the effort. Yeah, this really wasn't good.

The depth of the frown increases. Guppy thinks for a moment, then gets an ear thermometer out of the bag he grabbed from the infirmary on the way up. But the temperature is normal.

"Ray, you mentioned something about telepathic activity? I'm not familiar with that, can the two of you elaborate on this?"

Ray looks up sharply. "Huh? Oh... a while after Pete started coming here to Milliways he started having instances of psychic activity. I don't remember if we told you about that or not. The short version is that I used to be able to hear him pretty clearly if he thought at me on purpose while there was some form of physical contact, and when he tried to ping me the other day with a simple sentence it faded out like a bad cell phone signal halfway through."

Peter nodded, "I found out it was from long term exposure to PKE over the years. Kind of crystallized in my noggin. Also picked up some psychokinesis."

He then closed his eyes, and tried something with Ray. ::...testing(garble)...test...::
That's a lot worse too, faint, and garbled, and Ray would be lucky to understand any of it.

He noted a pen on the end table nearby, and tried to move it. Not even a tremor, and it only shivered faintly as he got more annoyed.

Plus, even that little effort took a toll on him, and his eyes briefly unfocused, his head slumping down.
