ChiCon7, day -1

Aug 30, 2012 06:33

I'm told that the day before the con is day -1, and that day 0 is the time tomorrow between midnight & when the opening ceremony happens.

Today was a quiet start; I actually used the hotel gym & did exercise things.
Well, some time on an elliptical trainer thingy, so that probably counts.
Breakfast was a late affair, right at the end of the period in which they serve it. Also, sadly, not that great, and kind of pricy; Maybe I've been spoiled by the JW Marriott in Indianapolis, but they were better, and cheaper, so tomorrow (which is, in fact, today as I write this) I shall look elsewhere.

I picked up my con badge & stuff from a very nice & professional registration area hidden two levels below the lobby, and managed to find a convenience store/wine shop/deli one block behind the hotel who'd sell me a six-pack of water. Managed to resist the six-pack of caffeine-free diet coke bottles, but it was a close-run thing.

I was rostered on at registration, handing out pre-registered badges, from 1 to 5. This mostly didn't happen.
Instead, I spent 1 to 9 collating daily program sheets into sets for inclusion in the con pack, carrying boxes of con books & pocket programs down the narrow-ass aisle behind the folks handing out badges & taking new registrations to keep them supplied, telling people that we don't know where the Program Participant people are & we hope they'll be here tomorrow, and occasionally handing out badges.

I'm pretty confident that I was useful, and I'm rostered on again from 8 to 10 tomorrow morning. I suspect this will actually be 7ish to 12ish, since they open at 8, and can't leave any of the gear set up overnight, and con programming doesn't start until 11.

At some point I need to find Volunteer Coordination & get my sign-in sheet, as the hours worked before the con count double. No idea what one gets; Maybe a t-shirt, maybe a shiny badge ribbon.

Dinner was a surprisingly good steak from the hotel bistro/restaurant, though on my timeline it was lunch. Not part of the plan, but I just didn't get hungry.
