Summary: It's the truth of their relationship that Brittany has never been able to save Santana from the person who could hurt her most, and no matter how hard she tries, Brittany knows she never will.
“Do you understand what I'm trying to say here?”
“Not really.”
Her answer is a lie, and its a testament to just how emotional Santana is that she doesn't see it. Santana, who knows her better than she knows herself a good portion of the time, this girl who understands her on the fundamental level is missing the truth. She's missing what Brittany is trying and failing to do. Because really, its the truth of their relationship that Brittany has never been able to save Santana from the person who could hurt her most, and no matter how hard she tries, Brittany knows she never will.
Lots of people think Brittany's dumb, and she probably is. Recipes confuse her, and the concept of brunch literally had her in a daze for weeks until Santana finally explained that it wasn't some magical freak of nature. She does a good portion of her homework in crayon and has absolutely no idea that drawing pictures of unicorns and sombreros is no way to pass a Spanish test. Still, there is something that people seem to forget. Brittany may not be an academic, and sure, she thinks storks really bring babies, but she's smart in the one way that really counts. She's smart about Santana and its because of this that she's trying to save her, trying to stop what she knows is coming next. Even as she tries, Brittany knows it won't work. She can almost hear the pieces of her heart shattering as Santana keeps going.
“I love you.”
The words steal the breath from her body and she stares at the dark brunette in wonder. Sure, it's not the first time she's heard Santana say the words. It's happened more often than she can count, but this time is different than all the others. There's no denial in Santana's voice, no teasing warning in her brown eyes. No, this time she can see the uncertainty, the fear, and she knows just how hard it is for Santana to finally give a voice to the feelings she's had locked up for so long.
Knowing that only makes what Brittany has to say next that much harder. Because it isn't that she doesn't love Santana. She's waited so long to finally say it, and she's spent this whole year trying to find a way to get her friend to listen. Sadly, Santana's admission has come too late.
Brittany can't say when she started to care about Artie, but somewhere in between not singing a duet and now he's grown on her. She's proud of her relationship with him, and while he can never be Santana, it's so refreshing to be with someone who isn't afraid to care about her. He may be a bit of dick sometimes, and yeah he can't walk, but he's not afraid to talk to her, to feel something. Somewhere along the line, Brittany realized that she's started to love him and the thought of hurting him makes her sick.
She tries to ease the situation, to comfort Santana even though she knows her words are only confirming every fear Santana just tried to face. It's heartbreaking to watch as the girl's nervous glances become looks of anger. This is something that they've never faced before. Sure, she went maybe a whole week without being affectionate toward Santana, but that had been to make Santana want her more. This was something else. This was rejection, pure and simple. It was pouring salt in an open bleeding wound and Brittany could do absolutely nothing but watch it burn as her friend walked away.
There's a reason its called falling in love. It's painful, and its frustrating, and it always seems to hit you when you least expect it. She can see it happening to Santana just like it happened to her, and no matter how much she wants to help Brittany can't. She loves Artie, and he loves her. It would be wrong to break his heart just because her friend finally admitted how she truly feels. They've both been defying gravity too long, and now its time they both hit the ground.
“Who would've ever thought that being fluid meant you could be so stuck?”
