Creative Muses Prompt May 004 “Mad as a Hatter”

Peter was stunned and shocked when he saw the book staring at him from the library shelf. Activating Evolution. It sounded like some kind of gimmicky science experiment. He had never heard of the author, an Indian Genetics professor named Chandra Suresh. It had a whole section on what he was interested in, Human Flight Potential, but also tons of other things like Rapid Cellular Regeneration, Teleportation and Telekinesis. Peter couldn’t believe there could actually be a real, scientific explanation for what was happening to not just him, but Nathan too. He knew that whatever was happening was going to affect them both, that they were connected in a way that went beyond just being brothers. Whenever he tried to tell Nathan, though, he looked at Peter like he was a crazy person ranting in the Union Square Subway Station about the end of the world and a new race rising up to control humans.
Peter immediately checked out the book and went to Nathan’s midtown campaign office. He pushed his way past the swarms of both interns and seasoned campaign employees until he found his brother. Nathan started asking him about ties and postcards, and whether voters would be encouraged or discouraged if he emulated the President, but Peter had much more important things to talk to him about. He had the answer to what had happened, and what he was convinced was still happening, and would continue to happen to them both. He rattled off some facts for Nathan, about genetic mutations and DNA sequences, and about how to get in touch with the author. The database at the library had told him that Dr. Suresh had moved to New York to continue his research. Peter had barely gotten this last sentence out of his mouth when Nathan put his arm around Peter’s shoulders and slyly moved him away from the crowd. Then there it was again. The Union Square Subway Station look. Nathan still thought he was mad as a hatter.
