2nd Deduction [Text]

Jul 21, 2011 08:39

Having experienced an Event first hand I feel more sure than ever now that neither Wonderland nor the Queen have anything to do with our presence here. Wonderland itself is most certainly responsible for events, however. Rather like our dreams, events are Wonderland's way of making sense of the jumble of information that we and our realities ( Read more... )

[Using the communications device has been giving Evelyn some 'bout of trouble, but at least she's learning. It's much like a very small typewriter.]

Perhaps if I knew your name, I might be able to assist.

[She is a librarian, after all.]

Sherlock Holmes. How can you be of assistance?

[...Sherlock Holmes. Well. All...right...then. Because it wasn't like she was reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes the other day, or anything, and she's quite certain that he wouldn't be nearly so adept at this "texting" thing.

Then again, he's a very smart man.]

My name is Evelyn Carnahan. My profession lends itself to quite a bit of research.

I've also read about you before.

Read my website or read this book that exists somewhere with me in it? I can't really be sure of the difference until I read it for myself but for now I'll assume there's a difference.

And what is your profession?

[Oh Heavens, what on earth is a website?]

I've read a book about you, yes.

I work at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, as a cataloging and translations specialist. Research tends to be a rather large part of what I do.

Interesting specification. Can't think of too much use given the circumstances but things change. Good news is that you're from Earth. What year? How many languages can you transcribe?

[My word, he seems rather brusque. She suddenly feels as though she's sending in an application to join the Bembridge scholars all over again.]

English, French, Greek, Latin, Italian, Ancient Egyptian and Hieratic.

[Moment of truth.]

By my time, the year is 1926.

Fairly impressive.

[Sherlock flips on video. Only so much he can deduce from typing.]

So, what does a cataloging and translations specialist do towards uncovering the mysteries of Wonderland?

[Thank goodness he changes it to the miniature live-filming contraption. She still isn't quite sure how to manage that on her own- there it is.

...and he doesn't look at all like the original Sidney Paget illustrations.]

To be honest, whatever I can do. I've only just gotten here about a week ago. When did you arrive?

A week before you it would seem. And over eighty years after.

[Sherlock is satisfied with his current deductions about her. He leaves video on, though.]

I'm curious as to know what you think of the place.

It's not an objectionable sort of place - not so far, at least. Just unusual. I'm not one to believe in any of that magical hokum, Mr. Holmes, but after facing it dead-on there doesn't appear to be any other option.

[...wait.]

...did you say eighty years after?

The difference between magic and science, Miss Carnahan, is in the ignorance of the audience. It can be explained, I'm sure. Simply a matter of looking for a real justification rather than being content to call it supernatural. Keep to your doubts. They'll keep you thinking.

And yes, eighty four to be exact. I'm from London, 2010.

Thank you.

[Interesting advice, and definitely the kind she appreciates while stranded here. Lumping everything together under "Cannot Be Explained" just doesn't sit well with Evelyn.

The only thing that really bothers her is the date. Holmes wasn't immortal. He wasn't even real.]

The Sherlock Holmes I read about...was in a book published in 1887.

1887... well before my time. We're from different versions of Earth, then. How was London when you left it? You're old enough to remember the first world war; did you have a world war in your Earth?

London was doing quite well for itself the last time I was there.

[How long ago was that? Maybe three months?]

The first world war? You mean the Great War. Yes, I remember that very well. I was twelve on Armistice Day.

Interesting. I wonder if the extent of similarities is less or greater than those of the differences.
