Mikami was getting tired of these rooms switching around on him. if this place insisted on keeping him here, (as if he had anywhere else to go), It should at least let him take shelter from others by hiding in his room. Every once in a while, he would make a trip to the kitchen only for the necessity of eating, but then he would make a point of

To make me rise an hour early just like Daylight Savings Time

Do it again now

[Still bobbing his head, Mihael continues to the bar, grinning like an idiot.]

Having fun?

[Mihael pulls himself onto a barstool next to Matt.] I have not met you before, da? You are a different... [He gives a confused look, trying to remember the other redhead's name.]
Well. You are different, yes?
Reply
[He puts down the beer he immediately poured himself once he could, and offers that hand to shake.]
Mello, or something else?
Reply
Good to meet you! I am Lieutenant Mihael Keehl, Russian military. I prefer Mihael, but if you feel the need to refer to me as so silly a name as "Mello," then do as you must. [He only shrugs goodnaturedly.]
Is this help yourself bar?
Reply
[He pushes his glass over to the other side in preparation for resuming his bartender duties. His Mello would doubtless be annoyed to know it, but Matt finds Mihael's slightly awkward English pretty damn cute.]
Dude, it's weird to hear your name out loud. You know why most of us're so neurotic about it, yeah?
Reply
He gives Matt a curious look, sure he's been told before. Perhaps by Melushak...? Once again, Mihael is forced to curse his horrible memory.]
Something about a holy war and needing to keep your true names private, for survival's sake. [He shrugs.] Apparently, in my own world, I am not of a high enough ranking to deserve Kira's direct wrath.

[Matt takes his seat on the bar stool again and reclaims his beer.]
The rest is that most of us have had secrecy drilled into us from crazy-young ages. Eleven for me, and that's old, comparatively speaking.
[He tips his head at Mihael.]
Your world has Kira, but you never went to Wammy's?
Reply
Yes, we have Kira, but I grew up with my mother and brother in Russia. Two years ago, I joined the Russian military, a private unit reserved for special operations - such as the war against Kira. [He takes a sip of his beer, eyes trained on Matt.]
Did you defeat him, in your world?
Reply
Huh, guess we have a way of ending fighting him no matter what. [He wants to ask about Mihael's family, but he has a Wammy's kid's sensitivity about how personal that is.]
Yeah. We beat him. [That comes out flatter than he'd like.]
Reply
Yes, I guess that we do. I do wonder if it becomes so... personal for us all, or if that would only be me. [Mihael steers his contemplative expression at his drink.
He turns in his seat and gives Matt a surprised though pleased grin.] We do? That, my boy, is the best news I've heard today.

[Matt's fine with letting the topic of exactly how they won drop. He doesn't want to be the one to burst Mihael's bubble.]

I was close to someone indirectly harmed by Kira and his influence.
[He sits there a moment, thinking over this answer, and then swallows when he realizes that he can practically hear Irina telling him that it is unhealthy, to deny the truth as long as he has.]
Her name was Irina Sokolov - "peace belonging to the falcon," basically. She was a good woman; fierce, and good. I signed into the military both to carry on the honor of my father and my father's father, and to give her a better life than her family could afford. She would be mine by now, if not for Kira.
His murdering created worldwide panic, and several countries have since fallen into disrepair and anarchy. My unit works almost around clock to fight off guerilla warfare in my home country of Russia. While I was on tour near Moscow last winter, St. Petersburg was attacked. [He takes a long swig of his beer before continuing.] Thirty-nine civilian casualties, eighty-four injured, both military and civilian. My fierce Irina was shot repeatedly by rebel Kira-supporters when she would not let them murder an elderly woman. [His tale finally told, he resumes his drinking binge, ready to grab another longneck upon finishing his first.]

[There's really not much more he can say.]
You've met L? Ryuuzaki, I mean? Kira killed our version. Mello... fuckin' idolized him. And I- [He blushes faintly.] Well, where Mello went, I did too, sooner or later.
Reply
Yes, I have met L, while on vacation here. [Mihael gives Matt a look.] I do not intend to be insensitive, but I am not truly surprised that so frail and silly a man meets his end more often than not by Kira.
[Behind the counter, he gives Matt a confused look.] Where did Mello go? Back to... [He pauses, trying to remember what their orphanage was called, before giving up and grabbing another beer, once more opening it using the counter.] ...that home of yours? In England?
Reply
Don't let Ryuuzaki's looks fool you. I was never much for the hero worship thing, but he was prob'ly the best mind of his generation.
[He sips at his beer before going on.] No, that's where we met. He went out on his own to hunt Kira down after L died.
