I've got nothing left for the journey home

[Matt's sitting at the table in one of the kitchens with a bowl of soup in front of him, but he's smoking instead of eating, using a stray teacup as an ashtray. His goggles are pushed up onto his forehead. Every once in a while, he pulls a piece of paper from his vest pocket, unfolds it, and smiles in a wavery sort of way before tucking it away ( Read more... )

Misa ventured out of his room most when he was lonely or bored, but too often, he didn't run into anyone. Today, he wanted to see if there might be some strawberry soda available in any of the kitchens, maybe even strawberry ramune. He wore a pair of tight hot pink pants and a distressed black t-shirt, matching pink streaks in his hair; it had all put him in mind of tastes he was missing from back home. Even if it was kid stuff, he still liked it.

He was surprised and pleased to find that someone already occupied the first kitchen he tried. He couldn't stop the tentative smile from spreading across his face.

"Um... hi! You're Matt, right?"

[Well, this is a new one.]

Yeah... and you are?

He looked to the side, seeming perhaps a little bit pouty: wasn't it obvious?

"Misa-Misa.

"Listen, have you seen any strawberry soda in here?"

Sorry, ha. I never met a guy Misa before.

I saw some Tantrum, I think. And all kinds of tea and coffee.

[He's a little distracted by Misa's inherent boyness.]

This was not an excuse. He'd noticed that almost everyone's gender could be switched in this place, in comparison to what he was used to.

"What's Tantrum?" His confusion appeared to be genuine, although the message -- not strawberry soda -- was clear.

He opened the refrigerator, and found something, down low and way at the back: a pink can. "Oooooh! Here's some." Next would be a glass, ice, and a straw.

It's like Jolt, kinda sorta. Heavily caffeinated.

[He watches Misa with bemusement, idly wondering if this one has the eyes too.]

Are you a pop star back home like the others?

"Pop star? Yeah, I guess so. When I got dragged here I was about to go onstage for my first show at Budokan. I don't think it's the same kind of music exactly that the chicks sing. I'm more visual, I guess."

The sulkiness returned, expanded: he had been pulled away just when he thought everything was going well for him. By this point, he had ice in a glass, but --

"I like strawberry better. Have you seen any straws in here?"

No, sorry.

[He pushes his fingers under the goggles to rub his eyes.]

Have you been here a long time?

The pink tip of his tongue stuck out, at that: he wanted a straw.

"Yeah, I guess so. I don't know. I was in this one room that made me really sleepy. I think I slept for a long time. The last thing I remember before a couple of days ago was a day when I met one of the fake Lighto-chans."

[AND HERE THE MUN INTRODUCES: THE HIATUS ROOM, a place where we can all pretend that our inactive characters have been sleeping for weeks at a time with no harm to them. XD ]

[The room, he accepts without comment: anything can happen here, and often does. But:] 'Lighto-chan'? Really?

This didn't improve Misa's expression. He was a naturally cheerful person, but his mood could be mercurial; he didn't have much tolerance for disappointment.

"Yeah. Why do you ask?"

Well, first of all, I can't believe a Light would answer to that, and second of all, isn't 'chan' for girls?

He rolled his eyes, giving the impression that he thought Matt was slow to catch on.

"Yee-eeessss. Duh! Of course Lighto-chan is a girl."

[Okay, maybe he should have considered that option.]

Ohh. Is Ryuuzaki a girl too?

Misa's first answer to this was an expression that bordered on derisive, but some suspicion filtered into it; he had never liked Ryuzaki.

"Why wouldn't she be?"

Wow, that I'd like to see. I've only ever heard of guy versions.

I bet you don't know me or Mello or Near in your world, do you?

[He wonders if everyone is flipped from how he knows them. He knows a girl Matt, and there's that girl Mello he keeps hearing about but never meeting, but Near as a girl is a deeply weird concept.]
