Fate is against me in health and virtue, driven on and weighted down, always enslaved

She raps her fingers against the wallpaper. Not a hologram. Felt solid enough.

What was she doing in this fancy place? There wasn't a single booze bottle or empty syringe in sight; it was like out of a dream world. Was she here at all? Nah... Had to be a trick. Mind was screwing with her. Fuck, just how doped up was she? It had to be the endorphins ( Read more... )

*L, walking through an adjacent corridor, hears the shout. A familiar female voice. He pokes his head around the corner -- just his forehead and eyes -- and sees a young woman a distance away.*

Yellow, Misa?

*The wallpaper isn't. His voice, mild in tone, should carry to where she stands.*

She swerves around, intuitively crouching into a defensive position. Eyes widen at the sight of the stranger.

"Oh my god..." she whispers. "Beyond?"

*He lets a little more of his face show; it is now frowning.*

Certainly not. Although I think one of them may turn up sooner or later.

*He doesn't like being mistaken for B -- any of them, with their greater or lesser imitative successes. This place exacerbates the effect by bringing genuine doubles in, along with those who are merely engaging in wishful thinking.*

What are you looking for, Misa?

She mirrors the frown, retracting the forward motion she gave at the sight of a familiar face. Certainly not? He definitely wasn't Beyond - the way this man talked. He was much more well-kept than her former friend.

Half-facing the stranger, half-facing the other direction. Her eyes make a momentarily dart towards the opposite way; she could outrun this man if it came down to that.

"...who are you?" Wary. He was unarmed, but...

Hey.

[Have a Matt, even more subdued than usual, but giving her a curious look.]

Misa. You okay?

A look in his direction. He wasn't familiar at all. From the way he looked, maybe he was a bartender? Or maybe a mechanic. Yeah, that fit his image. The gloves and boots definitely gave her the impression he was an oil-friendly man. She felt slightly more comfortable around a common man than that scientist, but nevertheless, he was a stranger. She'd best be leaving, lest he ends up turning into one of those spinal column thieves.

"Sorry. Got the wrong person," she mutters, turning away.

You're new, yeah?

[He drags off his cigarette and flicks his ashes just anywhere in the hallway.]

The cigarette mellows her nerves a little. The smell of smoke was a welcome compared to the wholesome domestic landscape of the building. When was the last time she went into a place with carpets?

On the other hand, he was clearly high. But she tries her luck anyway. If he became violent, she could easily take him on.

"New to what?"

She immediately reacts by leaping back, lengthening the distance between them. She casts a severe eye over the newly arrived stranger. This man's presence was the most notable by far; he was a giant. Couldn't be human, absolutely no way. Once again, he showed no visible bionic parts, but that didn't fool her for a second. He was too well-built, too perfect to be an average, un-tampered with earthling.

"What do you want?"

It was the second time somebody asked her that question. New? New to what? Was this an institution? A slaughterhouse? And there was something predatory about his movements that heightened her sharpness.

"Sure, I'm new here." She lied to the redhead, but wasn't sure what to make of this one. Might as well stick to the truth for now.

::turning the corner, she's surprised to see a version of herself that looks a bit...different. A bit rough around the edges, this one, and she doesn't look as if the whole world revolves around her. How strange.::

Um, excuse me!
::she calls out, tenatively::

The similarities between them were blatantly noticeable at first glance. A clone? No, wait. That was right - this mansion had doubles of people from alternative universes. She relaxes.

Granted, though they shared many identical features, there were also gaping differences between them. For one thing, the girl in front of her was shorter than her.

"Yes, what do you want?"

Ah-
::she seems a little nervous, but she smiles, glad that the woman at least didn't act shocked at her presence.::
I just wanted to say hello. I haven't see you here before. And, you seem different than the other doubles.
You are alright, then? Someone has explained everything to you?

"Yes," she replies tersely, pretending to not have heard the different comment. "I can manage on my own, thanks."

Which was true even with her damaged leg. She doubted her 21st century counterpart could do much to help assist her in anyway.

But she wouldn't deny this physical clone of herself piqued her curiosity. Rather than leaving this stranger as she did with the others, she decided to humor her company for a little while longer.

"You're...Misa?"

Deducing from what all the others addressed her as, she was pretty sure that was the collective name for her other worlds' counterparts.
