Rue walked down a dark hallway looking down, he was trying not to look at the doors in fear of being tempted and walking into one, he would regret later on. He finally looked up and saw a door that almost seemed to be pulling him to it ( Read more... )

It had been a while since A had been outside, and even longer since he'd felt rain on his skin. Or at least, had the perception of being outside and feeling rain, as he realized that this was only a fabricated atmosphere created by this nexus. The rain didn't even bother him as he walked across the roof, he simply hugged his arms to his chest and continued on his way. Mindlessly, he walked out near the edge, gasping and stumbling back a few feet in fright. He'd always been scared to death of heights, despite spending hours on the orphanage roof studying.

*Mel sees A back up in a hurry, and it's enough to pique her interest. Not only does she not recognize him, it's the sort of unguarded reaction people in the mansion almost never display.*

Hey. You all right?

Startled by the voice behind him, A gasped and turned around quickly. Realizing that his glasses were getting too wet to be able to see through properly, he tilted them down his nose to see just who had spoken, and was shocked to see someone resembling Mello. He had met several adult versions of his fellow successor here, but it still surprised him.

"I'm fine, just a bit...startled by the view," he said, sounding a bit embarrassed over the fact that his cowardice had been on such full display.

Haven't seen this one before, huh? *Quietly ignoring his embarrassment, more interested by how he seemed to recognize her.*

I'm Mel, hi.

A frowned a bit at the greeting. Mel? The Mello that he knew would never use such a feminine sounding nickname. But then, this version did seem a bit more...

Wait.

"But, you're a woman!" A said incredulously, realizing just a second too late just how rude he'd sounded. "Ah...I mean..." Real smooth, Alternate.

*Mel laughs.*

Don't be sorry. That's the best reaction I've gotten in months.

Feeling his face flush, he tried to return Mel's laughter with a small grin. "Well, I'm glad I could be of service, then. I'm A, or Alternate," he said, holding out a slightly wet hand for her to shake.

Oh. *She shakes his hand briskly, then pushes her wet hair back from her face.* I never met you in my world.

Should we take cover? *She has her coat on, but: rain, leather.*

"I knew you in my world but you were much younger and...well, male," he said, sounding a bit more blunt than he'd meant to. At the mention of cover, A glanced across the rooftop, trying to find a shelter that could accommodate them both, but it was hard to see without the use of his glasses. Everything just appeared to be a blurry mess.

"I'm afraid you'll have to lead the way, Mel. My vision is obscured."

No problem, this way. *She heads back toward the door into the building, and the shelter offered by the small overhanging roof.*

Mellos always seem to be boys. As too, but I know a girl one here.

A followed Mel over to the overhang and stepped underneath, shivering as a cold drop slipped from his hair and hit the back of his neck. He leaned against the wall, but reached out with one hand to feel the rain hitting it. "So far I've only met male versions of you, and I've been informed of a female version of myself, but have only met male versions."

He gave a short laugh and looked back over at Mel. "It's funny, isn't it? Makes you wonder what Freud would say if he saw the lot of us here."

*Mel laughs too as she fingercombs the water out of her hair.*

Throw in the rooms that make you tell the truth, or the ones with honest-to-fuck monsters, and he'd have a field day. If this is a mass hallucination, we are all seriously fucked in the head.

A quirked an eyebrow at Mel and withdrew his hand from the rainfall, wiping it on his pants mindlessly. "Ah...monsters? I'm guessing from your tone you don't mean metaphorical?"

Zombies, giant spiders... shit like I'd never seen before. Not strictly real, I guess, but real enough.

A flinched at the description. Of course, what appeared in these rooms was only fabricated by the mansion, but still. "That sounds... You know, I'm not even sure there's a word to describe just how that sounds, to be perfectly honest. Are these types of things common?"

It's not as bad as it sounds. Those rooms are marked with Xes, but I'm sure you've heard about that already.
