Venting my frustration on something trivial: writers

Jan 15, 2010 17:53

I lied. This might be a full blown rant, since I haven't used lj in forever and I absolutely needed to get this out of my system.

So I'm reading fics from my fandoms and I see a trend of desperate authors calling out silent readers and threatening them lest they comment. And normally I would just be like oh, it's just another fail of a writer looking for a quick fix and leave it at that. But today, I see this:

NO SILENT READERS. EFF THEM. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU PEOPLE SAY. I'LL HUNT YOU DOWN IF I HAVE TO. GO AHEAD AND BAN ME BUT YOUR 10 WORD COMMENT MINIMUM...THING...GIVES ME INSPIRATION. (directly quotes, caps and everything)

Ok, 3 things.

First off, you want readers to comment, but then follow it up with "eff them" and "I don't care what you people say", and finally "I'll hunt you down if I have to". Sorry, I don't negotiate with terrorist.

Second, how desperate are you that a mere 10 words of possibly incoherences would satisfy you? If your fic was truly good, you wouldn't need to resort to threatening people for reviews. The fact that you did just screams LOOK AT ME I'M INSECURE ABOUT MYSELF.

Third, and possibly the MOST important point in this entire rant. Who are you writing this for? On the risk of sounding overly philosophical/analytical, I want to point out that you should be writing FOR THE SAKE OF THE WRITING ITSELF. Not to feed your obviously stunted self esteem. Forums are already being trashed with shit quick fixes and unpolished (understatement) pieces, and what's worse is that people still give good reviews SIMPLY BECAUSE THE AUTHOR WROTE ABOUT THEIR OTP. But then, ACTUAL, WELL-WRITTEN pieces of less popular pairings are devalued just because they don't adhere to the mainstream pairings. I'm getting off topic, but point is, people should not be taking comments/reviews for granted because as readers, it is NOT our duty to comment, but rather YOUR responsibility as an author, of conjuring up a story that would COMPEL us to comment. Once again, YOU SHOULD BE WRITING FOR THE SAKE OF THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS THEMSELVES AND NOT BECAUSE YOU WANT ATTENTION BECAUSE YOU WERE DEPRIVED AS A CHILD.

That last line was harsh, but whatever. On another note, on a whim, I read that person's fic and it proved me right every step of the way. PEOPLE STILL DON'T FUCKING KNOW HOW TO SPACE PARAGRAPHS/DIALOG. And you don't need to write "End of Flashback, now back to Sensual Music". This isn't a fucking play. You don't need to write "2 hours later" or "the next day" EVERY TIME you switch scenes. It's called TRANSITIONS. Go look it up and learn how to use them. And note the random capitalizations in there.

AND FIND THE F7 KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD. LEARN IT. LOVE IT. USE IT. The amount of fail punctuations/grammar errors are just...mind boggling. It begs the question. HOW DID YOU GET INTO COLLEGE WRITING SHIT LIKE THAT.

I'm done. Tired of pointing out the fails in people when things like this will never change. I'm going to do something more uplifting. Like sleep.

wtf people need to learn not to be assho
