It all boiled down to Mello's temper. It burned hot and fierce and quick. He couldn't keep a hold on it. It wasn't like didn't try. But he had a short and nasty temper, that was all there was to it. And Near just pissed him off.
So really, it was all Near's fault. If Near hadn't pissed him off - he couldn't even remember how, now - he never would have lost his temper. And he never would have thrown the first punch. And if he hadn't thrown the first punch....
God, it pissed him off even to remember it. How Near had narrowed his eyes and just ploughed into him. The smaller boy had headbutted him in the stomach, knocking him down. And then Near was on top of him, frowning and grunting as he punched Mello's shoulders with his little hands. And that wouldn't have been bad. It wasn't like tiny little Near could hurt him. But he'd fought back. And they'd ended up with their legs all twisted together and Near practically smothered under Mello and then it had happened.
At least Mello could take comfort in the fact that he hadn't been the only one. sure, he'd turned beat red in anger and embarrassment when he felt himself get aroused as he struggled against Near - the little bastard bit! - but he'd felt Near, too. Not that he wanted to be remembering the fact that he'd felt Near's erection against his leg. But he had. It had been warm and firm and impossible to ignore. And he was sure Near had been feeling the same thing, because he had been just as hard. And they had both frozen and jerked apart, glaring at each other and resolutely not mentioning what had just happened.
At least now he'd probably think twice about punching Near. No matter how much the brat pissed him off.
