You know that 'How To Use It' rule that states the user of a Death Note is possessed by the Shinigami owner of the Note until ownership of the Notebook is lost or the user dies? (words to that effect, at least)
Well, I've been thinking this over, and I've begun to consider the possibility of a literal interpretation of that rule. Think about it- there is something in that Notebook that makes you want to try it at least once, according to Light (though that could just be human morbid curiosity). There's also something about it that turns perfectly-groomed, well-loved teenagers into mass-murdering psychopaths and eventually drives them insane. In Light it brings out his narcissism, in Misa her possessiveness, in Teru his lust for revenge, in Takada her worst levels of bitchiness and in all of them it brings out a willingness to kill.
So, is there a possibility that there's something actually lurking in that Death Note? Something that possesses a user when used, or even from the start, that brings out their worst qualities to keep them killing- or was innocent!Light not so innocent at all?
