Ah yes! I was hoping against hope I'd get Rem/Higuchi out of this prompt, although I just couldn't bring myself to attempt it. Not only is this NOT crack, you made it work, and beautifully. I love your characterization of Rem: her incapacity to feel (oh irony of ironies); her wonderfully IC ruminations, and her almost innocent curiosity juxtaposed with her disgust. And you nailed Higuchi as well, but who cares about him? ;-D

And then, the kiss occurring over the background of Misa's commercial was achingly wonderful.

ETA: One thing I forgot to mention that confused me a bit: I thought Jealous (like most shinigami) was unaware that he could die by killing Misa's attacker, in which case mortality could not have been a choice for him.

XD Rem/Higuchi.. haha. To be honest when I started writing, I didn't know where I was going to go with it aside from contrast/comparison of Rem and Higuchi. And somehow, Misa crept in, and somehow, Rem kissed Higuchi. I don't really know how it happened. Probably lack of sleep on my part.

Yeah, you could be right about Jealous. But generally, I think that the Shinigami must know their boundaries, and though there isn't really concrete canon, I like the Jealous story better if he saved Misa knowing such a thing is forbidden and that he might face consequences. XD But this is me, a drama whore!

You're right, there's no solid evidence one way or another WHAT Jealous could have known, but Rem does say that she's one of the few of her kind who know how to kill a shinigami. I guess it really is a matter of interpretation, though. My drama-whore tendencies run in the opposite direction: I like to think that unlike Jealous, she knew the price she was paying for loving and protecting Misa. It makes the act seem uniquely noble and pure and...stuff. XD

You're quite welcome, and seriously, every once in a while I come across a fic I wish I'd written myself. This here's one of them.

That was amazing. Oh my god, thank you for entering, thank you. You rock. I knew this was going to be fantastic, and it absolutely was. I never even thought about Rem's POV, she never quite registered as an important character for me, but you did a wonderful job giving her...well, humanity. I love her desperation, that she wanted to feel alive, to connect with someone like Misa so badly that she'd pick Higuchi of all people. And Higuchi was disgustingly in character, too. He would envy Rem. Great job. ♥

That's so sad. A beautiful character study of Rem - you kind of have her darkness and her goodness in there and all the contradictions and confusions work really well. Awesome work.

Ooh, I'm very glad you've written something for this comm! Your interpretation of Rem is very believable. The concept that drives this fic is moving...and captures this complex character to a T. I really love this.
