"Good work, gentlemen. Looks like we're dismissed," was always how he ended it. I don't mean to make fun of him, but is Chief Yagami really a stiff through and through? He's a good worker and leader, obviously. But sometimes I wonder if he's completely happy. Mm...maybe I shouldn't be wondering about him. This Kira case we have in front of us fills our palms pretty well anyways.

At least, I thought that until Aizawa approached me.

"Hey Matsuda, you doing anything tonight?"

To be frank I was a little surprised that he asked me that question. We're not in hatred of each other but we weren't the best of buddies either. It wasn't too weird, but I was definitely intrigued.

"Mm, no I'm not actually."

"Well, I was thinking..."

So far, so good.

"We all need a break, you think? Me and Mogi were gonna head for some karaoke and drinks."

"That sounds great, but I don't drink!"

When I said that, Aizawa broke out in hysteric laughter. It was true though, honestly! I've had a couple sips in my lifetime but never a full glass. Though confused, I waited for the laughter to end.

"Haha!" Aizawa finished. "Its okay, Matsuda. We're not so brainless to consume alcohol like that."

Of course! We're the Japanese Police Force! Yeah, we've got brains. I grinned as I heard it over and over. We got brains. We got brains.

"Sure, it'd be great to go," I replied anxiously. That reaction would be expected since I haven't been to a Christmas Party since high school.

"Its settled then," Aizawa said to Mogi. "Its you, me, and Matsuda tonight with mikes and shot glasses."

You, me and Matsuda was what he said. It was strange, but almost had a catchy ring to it. Adding mikes and shot glasses too, I liked it. Then again...

"Hey, what if we invite the chief?" I asked reluctantly.

Aizawa's smile washed away pretty fast. He glanced at Chief Yagami, who was packing a few documents, then back at me with an almost sympathetic look.

"Matsuda, I think he's a really great guy too. But don't you think he's got other priorities? Like family, his job, and...being old?"

What? Being old? I knew the chief was the oldest and wisest of all of us, but would he be so old that its a whole other priority? Silly sounding or not, Aizawa was right about the family and job part.

"Yeah, I guess you're right..." I said as my head dropped in disappointment.

Mogi turned to me. "Aizawa's correct you know. Yagami's got his hands full."

Fuller than any of us, that's true.

"...Mr. Yagami, would you like to join us at a small party?" Mogi suddenly addressed to the chief..!

"What?!" Aizawa was in shock, along we me. "Mogi, I thought we went over this?!"

"If there's something Yagami is missing out on, we should ask first."

That's Mogi alright. We all had our strong points, but he was the smart one.

Mr. Yagami turned his head to all of us, at first skeptical. " 'Small party' means just the three of you?"

"Just us," Mogi looked at me and Aizawa. "Besides, I need a daddy to help me watch these children."

Me and Aizawa were insulted, we really were. But we awaited for chief's answer, so we just gritted our teeth and bore it.

"I'm sorry," the chief said. "Too busy. Maybe another time."

"Well chief, what're you too busy for?" I suddenly jumped up. Uhh...I have a tendency to do that, I always feel as if I get myself into trouble...but we did get some headway.

"Err..." Chief paused. "Mm, well, mm...I have some paperwork to attend to."

Aizawa slyly grinned as he caught on. "But didn't you already file it today?"

"Older paperwork!"

"You never miss a filing day, though."

Ironically, the chief was caught in the act red-handed. Arresting my own chief, it was a little cool!

"I see," Mogi said. "You're just not feeling the fun tonight?"

The chief turned his head away, in a sense trying to push us all away. "I may be free tonight, but I refuse to g--"

You honestly think that we couldn't persuade our chief? Well, as you can see, he's with us right now. Two points for being able to persuade him.

"Mm," I pondered. "Maybe since I'm here, just once glass of sake could do..."

"Oh no no, Matsuda," Aizawa started lecturing me, already drunk. "You're going to be our designated driver tonight. So none alcohol on you! None none none!" What was that now when I said the Japanese Police Force has brains..?

"Time will pass us byyyy, these daayyysss....~" Mogi sung merrily (and also drunk) into the karaoke mike.

Chief Yagami looked shy, but more so disgusted by the drunken baboons who he calls "coworkers". Well...who he "called" coworkers that is, he couldn't believe that Mogi and Aizawa could get more drunk than ever. Knowing that I had brains just like him and couldn't take down any drinks, I walked over to sit next to him.

"Chief Yagami, are you enjoying yourself?" I asked, trying to make conversation over Mogi's drunken melodies.

"If I knew that two of my coworkers were to get so drunk they couldn't even stand straight, I wouldn't even consider coming here," he said bluntly.

"Chiiiiieeeeeeeeff..." Mogi slammed his hands onto the table in front of me and the chief, which scared me just for a second. "You look so depressed...why don't you enjoy with me and Aizawa something to drink?" he whispered as he poured some sake into a small shot glass, pushing it across the table to the chief.

Uh oh, the chief looks even more disgusted by intoxicated Mogi...

"You've got to be kidding me. I haven't consumed alcohol for 15 years now. And that's never going to cha--"

You got it right. It happened, somehow we were able to persuade chief. I was getting a little jealous because I didn't have anything to drink, but I least me and Mr. Yagami still have the brains!

"No no, no, I am an a the chief officer...and you are...under...my foot..."

Wow, when the chief is drunk, he keeps his adult aloofness. But he loses his brains too.

I went over to the side where the window was, looking out at the people walking all over the city. There was so much movement around. Not just because it was Tokyo, but also because it was Christmas Eve. With so many people and faces, you wonder what they're gonna do when they reach where they're heading. Maybe they're buying a Christmas gift for someone at a store, or taking it to them. Maybe they're gonna head out to another Christmas party, one like this. A whole family walking past from the left, a couple on the right, and a few people by themselves.

So many people in this city, so many people in this world. Out of everyone there is, I choose to spend my Christmas Eve with these people behind me. Thinking about it, I completely forgot that Kira was among one of us here in Tokyo. I completely forgot about our hands being full, with so many citizens dying. I'm not sure if Kira will kill tonight, but I think I have hope that even he feels like its a time to let it all go, just for Christmas. Chief Yagami...you needed this, didn't you?

"Matsuda..," the chief suddenly said, for he was right next to me. Even though I could tell he was drunk, he somehow got his brains back. "Thank you, and...merry...merry...Christmas..."

I looked over at him, smiling a little. "Chief, do you think Kira will try to kill tonight?"

"Who knows..." he said, looking out at the people through the window. "Today might not be an exception for the criminal who kills again and again for 'justice'..."

*********

"Hey Light, everyone's out hustling all over the city. Are you gonna break out your Death Note and prepare for any accidents?"

"Well Ryuk, I probably should. I have yet to give my holiday gift to the innocent people of Tokyo after all."

"Light~! Come downstairs now, your father just came home and we're having dinner!"

"Alright, coming Mom."

"Oooh, dinner? Don't mind if I do...~"

"You better not head for the fruit basket behind my back."

Light Yagami. Kira. He walked downstairs with his death god Ryuk behind him. He sat at the dinner table. He ate a Christmas dinner with his family.

No names were written in the Death Note that night.
