Anger flared in Light’s mind, and he grabbed L’s wrists and pushed him backwards onto the pile of cushions. “Shut up, it’s not about that!”
“You sure about that?”
It was not L that had spoken. The voice was deeper, harsher, inhuman, and the words contained far more mirth than L had probably expressed in his whole life. Light turned his face to one side and fixed the shinigami with a look that let him know how very dead he would be if it were possible for the death note to work on him.
Ryuk just laughed. “Come off it Light, if it’s obvious to me that power makes you hot then this guy must have figured it out.”
Light ground his teeth. He and the shinigami would be having some very serious words.
“Is there a problem?” L said mildly.
Of all the moments to ask that question…
“Don’t bring percentages into this, okay?” Light said, slipping seamlessly back into his original argument. “Can’t we just let that slide?”
L made that ridiculous sad face again. “I have explained that we must become accustomed to each other’s personalities. Your request makes it clear that you have not yet done so.”
“Not sure that’s true,” Ryuk said then, leaning over the back of the sofa to observe the two of them more closely. “Looking at you right now.”
Light did not respond to this, leaning his hands on either side of L’s head. “It’s not that. I just think you should keep this separate from the case.”
L continued to lie there, watching him. “Light is my chief suspect. It is hardly logical to separate this from the case.”
“Well, it would be nice if you didn’t remind me all the time,” Light said with flawlessly feigned exasperation, dropping himself on his side beside L. He judged that given the circumstances it would not be inappropriate to throw in a little tired massaging of his forehead, but as he raised his hand his eyes slid sideways and landed on L’s face. “…Why are you looking at me like that?”
“I thought we had come to an agreement.”
Light was tempted to yell, but he was too tired to even bother. “Forget it. The moment’s gone.”
L’s eyes widened a little but other than that he stayed still. Light wished it was possible to ignore him, but the detective was sprawled across the sofa, his limbs taking up more than half of the space, and there was no way Light could forget his presence.
“Hey, Light.”
If only it were possible to punch the shinigami without L noticing, Light mused.
“You can’t reply, I know.” Ryuk was reclining in mid air, a strange pose he’d probably picked up from a magazine or something, and he alternated between looks at the two of them effectively tangled together. “But that guy’s going to try and win you over pretty soon.”
On the outside, Light did not respond, but he was surprised. Ryuk didn’t often offer his opinion on subjects concerning human relationships. Was it the strangeness of the situation that had changed things? No, he had been there when Light and L first began this pretence, and while he had reacted he had not offered Light his opinion on L’s future behaviour. It was not that the competitive aspect interested him, either- in fact, the technicalities of the Kira case often seemed to bore him. Perhaps he was curious about human sexuality? Unexpectedly, Light was struck with a very disturbing image of Ryuk watching porn. He shook his head a little to dislodge the thought.
“Really? You don’t think so?” Ryuk said. He jabbed his finger at L’s face. “He’s been manipulating you all along, you know.”
Light could not suppress his surprise that time. While before he had simply been lying there, unable to escape Ryuk’s words, now he was most definitely listening.
“He comes in here, wanting this, and you tell him no, right? Then just a few minutes later- guess what? He’s made you agree.” Ryuk looked like he wanted nothing more than an apple to crunch triumphantly at that moment. His point, it seemed, had been made.
“Ryuzaki,” Light said, and turned his head to look at the older man. L had apparently been watching him this whole time, as he was already facing Light and did not have to move to meet the look.
“Yes, Light?”
